Speaking at the Maryland Democratic Party Gala. the former president took aim at Trump’s makeover of the Reflecting Pool. portraying it as another example of a president obsessed with putting his personal stamp on Washington landmarks. Biden’s target was both the project itself and the motive behind it.
He delivered the punch line to cheers from the crowd: “It’s not just his vanity projects … putting his name on the Kennedy Center. Building an arch in his own honor. Even hiring his own pool guy to fix the Reflecting Pool. Whoa, what a loser.”
Biden then widened the attack beyond vanity and straight into accusation. “The Reflecting Pool reflects something even worse than the narcissism and incompetence at the core of this administration,” he said, before escalating the language again.
“The corruption. The brazen, blatant corruption. Corruption on a scale never seen before in American history in any administration,” Biden continued.
The remarks landed as one of Biden’s sharpest attacks on Trump since leaving office, with the former president arguing that the president was prioritizing self-promotion over governing while alleging corruption throughout the administration.
The Reflecting Pool itself has been roiling with controversy tied to its facelift. In earlier coverage. it was reported that the pool absorbed “a bit of heat” during the renovations—people were accused of vandalizing the lining. ducks were found dead in and around the water. and algae infesting the pool led to hydrogen peroxide being dumped in the water.
There has also been attention on security around the site. A fence was reportedly built to secure the area and protect the President’s Reflecting Pool.
