Bettman declines succession details, insists exit isn’t soon

Bettman succession – Gary Bettman, celebrating his 74th birthday, refused to lay out a succession plan as NHL commissioner ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, saying he can’t do the job “forever” but that any retirement talk is “greatly exaggerated.” He also denied anything
Gary Bettman marked his 74th birthday with a familiar question waiting in the room: what comes next for the NHL commissioner.
Ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Bettman acknowledged the reality that time brings. “Any major organization, it’s incumbent upon its CEO, which a commissioner is, and its board, to have a succession plan. I am 74 and I do acknowledge the fact that I can’t do this forever,” he said.
But when pressed on timing and details, he stopped short—firmly. Bettman said the league has been working through the issue for some time. though not in a way that suggests an immediate handoff. “We have been in discussions over the last couple of years. at least. as to what a succession plan might look like. ” he said. “It hasn’t been fully implemented. the executive committee is fully on board. the board has been briefed in terms of the direction we may go.”.
What he would not confirm was urgency. “But beyond that, there’s nothing happening imminently, and reports of my demise or retirement are greatly exaggerated.”
His comments landed after earlier reporting on Tuesday that Bettman had begun conversations with members of the NHL’s Executive Committee to lay the groundwork for his eventual exit from the role. In his response. Bettman didn’t dispute that succession planning is on the table—he disputed the idea that anything is about to change.
Bettman is the first commissioner in NHL history and has been in the chair since 1993. Under his leadership, the league has expanded eight times, reaching 32 franchises, and has grown into a multi-billion-dollar business. His tenure has also been repeatedly tested by labour unrest, including a lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.
The sequence of Bettman’s remarks puts the same tension in focus: succession planning exists, conversations have taken place, but the commissioner drew a line around the present moment—no imminent transition and no retirement story that matches what’s being said publicly.

So he’s retiring or not? The article says both lol.
I’m pretty sure he’s already out the door, they just don’t want to say it before Game 1. Boards “briefed” sounds like PR. NHL gonna be different next season whether he admits it or not.
“greatly exaggerated” is commissioner code for yeah he’s leaving soon 😂. Like why talk about not forever unless the clock is ticking. Also 74 ain’t old, but 1993 is literally forever. I feel like they’re stalling until after the Cup Final.
NHL succession planning been a thing forever though… kinda like the labor stuff. Remember that lockout in 2004-05, that’s when they should’ve picked a new guy but they didn’t. Now they’re talking about the “executive committee” like regular people even know who that is. I don’t know, maybe Gary is just mad people keep asking and then he’ll disappear and someone else becomes commissioner overnight.
