Laney-Hamilton has been in the league since 2015, representing five teams throughout her career. The New York Liberty was her most recent squad, playing five seasons with the franchise as she helped them win the championship in 2024.
Laney-Hamilton now moves on to another chapter of her career after New York decided to waive her from the roster. Washington took the opportunity to sign her, boasting their depth on the squad.
Laney-Hamilton didn’t take part in Washington’s clash against the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday. Despite this, head coach Sydney Johnson had a hopeful timeline on when the incoming player will step onto the court.
“Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will not play today as she acclimates to the Mystics. But head coach Sydney Johnson is hopeful she’ll play Tuesday in Las Vegas. He said it was “somewhat of a no-brainer” to add her and he’s always respected her game,” reporter Jenn Hatfield wrote.
How Mystics played against Mercury
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will provide a key boost to the Mystics as they are in the playoff race. Meanwhile, the squad took down the Mercury by a 95-75 score.
Five players scored in double-digits for Washington in the win. Shakira Austin led the team with 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and one block. She shot 8-of-16 from the field, including 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. Sonia Citron came next with 19 points and six assists, Michaela Onyenwere had 13 points and two rebounds, while Kiki Iriafen provided 12 points and nine rebounds.
Washington improved to a 19-12 record on the season, sitting at second place in the Eastern Conference standings. They are above the Atlanta Dream and the New York Liberty while trailing the Indiana Fever.
Rolling with seven consecutive wins, the Mystics will look forward to their next matchup. They are on the road when they face the Las Vegas Aces on Aug. 11 at 10 p.m. ET.
