Travelers hoping for a quick Labor Day getaway may find themselves snarled by traffic if they don’t hit the road at the right time.
AAA and transportation data and insights provider INRIX have determined the best and worst times to travel by car over the holiday weekend.
AAA has also narrowed down the most popular destinations, based on its booking data.
“Travelers are seeking memorable experiences, and these top Labor Day destinations reflect that desire,” Vice President of AAA Travel Stacey Barber said in a news release. “AAA members are embarking on Alaska cruises and river cruises, touring National Parks, and sightseeing in Europe.”

What is the best time to travel on Labor Day weekend?
The best time to hit the road varies by day.
According to AAA and INRIX:
- Thursday, Sept. 3, the best time to drive is before 1 p.m.
- Friday, Sept. 4, the best time is before noon.
- Saturday, Sept. 5, the best time is before 10 a.m.
- Minimal traffic is expected Sunday, Sept. 6.
- Monday, Sept. 7, the best time is before noon.
What are the worst travel days for Labor Day weekend?
Friday and Monday are expected to be the busiest days for travel, but Saturday will be busy, too.
According to AAA and INRIX:
- Thursday, Sept. 3, the worst time to drive is between 2-7 p.m.
- Friday, Sept. 4, the worst time is noon-8 p.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 5, the worst time is 1-5 p.m.
- Minimal traffic is expected Sunday, Sept. 6.
- Monday, Sept. 7, the worst time is 2-5 p.m.

As of Aug. 24, AAA’s national average is $4.09 per gallon of regular fuel.
It was $3.19 per gallon last Labor Day.
Road trip tips
Drivers are encouraged to inspect their vehicles before road trips and to pack emergency supplies like jumper cables, flashlights, a first aid kit, and extra water and snacks.
AAA notes that they responded to more than 400,000 roadside assistance calls last Labor Day weekend.
