Beiranvand’s brutal early hit turns into Belgium save

Beiranvand’s 59th-minute – Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand weathered a knee-to-the-chest-and-neck collision from Romelu Lukaku three minutes into the match, then produced a tournament-defining stop in the 59th minute to help Iran draw Belgium 0-0 and stay alive in Group G.

INGLEWOOD, CA — Three minutes into the match, Alireza Beiranvand was on the ground after an inadvertent but brutal knee to the chest and neck from Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku. Medical personnel attended to him as he fought to catch his breath.

Sunday, June 21, the moment that looked like it could derail Iran’s World Cup effort became the setup for something rarer: a goalkeeper’s day so decisive that it changed what the final score could mean for Team Melli.

Iran finished with a scoreless draw against Belgium, a 0-0 result that kept it in the hunt with two points in Group G. Coach Amir Ghalenoei called it “fantastic,” saying Beiranvand had the “right concentration” and delivered “one very valuable point.”

“He had one of the best days today,” Ghalenoei said through FIFA translation. “He had the right concentration and he gave us one very valuable point.”

The fear after the early collision wasn’t abstract. Beiranvand had been through something similar in Iran’s opening match of the 2022 World Cup against England. when a collision eventually took him out of the contest and helped trigger a resounding 6-2 loss. This time. he got back up. collected himself. and stayed in the mindset that defending his goal by any means necessary was the job that mattered.

Saman Ghoddos, a teammate, put it plainly: “It wasn’t good for us, but he’s a strong guy.” He added, “I knew he was going to go up.”

Belgium pressed first. For roughly 80% of the first half, it held possession, creating a steady stream of chances. Beiranvand met each one, right there at the moment the attack arrived.

Then came the kind of save that tends to define entire tournaments. In the 59th minute. Belgium’s Maxim De Cuyper was positioned close enough to tap the ball just a few feet away from the net off a deflection. while Beiranvand was down on the grass. It was described as Belgium’s best opportunity of the day.

De Cuyper’s shot went toward the goal. Beiranvand somehow extended off the grass, got his left hand to it, and stonewalled the ball from going in. The ball stayed right in front of the goal before Beiranvand reeled it in.

Iran’s goalkeeper had to keep denying not just one chance, but the momentum Belgium carried into every attack. The 0-0 mattered because conceding a goal and losing would have put Iran in great danger of not making it out of the group stage.

Instead, Beiranvand finished with a seven-save shutout and was awarded the superior player of the match.

Even with seven saves, the scale of the numbers didn’t make it less significant. The match didn’t have the volume of saves seen in Curaçao’s Eloy Room’s 15-stop performance against Ecuador. and it wasn’t the same kind of viral spectacle associated with Cabo Verde’s Vozinha facing Spain. But this stop—built on grit, timing, and a body stretched in mid-response—had the feel of a peak moment.

It also marked a clear step up from Beiranvand’s World Cup start against New Zealand. when he conceded a goal just seven minutes in and another later in the second half. Iran’s offense saved the day then to salvage a 2-2 tie. In this game. the contrast was stark enough that Beiranvand didn’t even try to treat the moment as purely personal.

“It’s a great feeling when you’re helping your teammates,” he said.

Beiranvand isn’t new to the World Cup spotlight. The 33-year-old is playing his third World Cup after making his debut in 2018. He’s also long been seen as one of Iran’s standout goalkeepers. with his coach and teammates pointing to his senior career and his role as among the best Team Melli has seen.

“Alireza is one of our greatest goalkeepers in the history of Iranian football, and he’s achieved so many things,” Ghalenoei said.

  1. Wait so Lukaku just kneed him and it was “inadvertent”? Sounds like bs, knees are never that accidental lol. But props to the goalie for saving it anyway.

  2. I don’t get it, if there was a brutal collision in the 3rd minute how was it not a foul or even a card? Then he makes one save in the 59th and now it “changed what the final score could mean” like ok.

  3. This article reads like the goalie saved their whole tournament singlehandedly… but it was still 0-0, so like did they “stay alive” or just still stuck? Also knee to neck and he just got up??? I swear players are built different, and refs probably just looked away.
