Bed Bath & Beyond is restarting parts of its retail footprint in partnership with The Container Store, opening in 22 cities as customers in California get a rare perk: expired blue-and-white coupons will be accepted for a limited time through July 13.
On a day when most store reopenings are greeted with cautious optimism, Bed Bath & Beyond is leaning into something its fans used to treat like gold: old blue-and-white coupons.
The decades-old home goods retailer said it is beginning to reopen stores in partnership with The Container Store in 22 cities. including two locations in Southern California—Costa Mesa and Century City in Los Angeles—scheduled to open in the coming weeks. For a limited time. the company will accept Bed Bath & Beyond’s coupons “no matter how old they are. ” allowing customers to use their expired coupons until July 13.
For die-hard shoppers and coupon collectors, the offer is the kind of practical recognition that can feel personal. “For decades, our customers treated these coupons like treasure,” Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. President Amy Sullivan said in a statement Monday. “They tucked them into purses, filing cabinets, cookbooks and memory boxes because they believed they would be valuable someday. We think they were right.”.
The comeback attempt comes after a sharp fall. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and shut down all its locations. Following that bankruptcy, the company was bought by Overstock.com, which has since rebranded to Beyond, Inc. Bed Bath & Beyond began announcing the first phase of its brick-and-mortar reopenings last week. with stores planned in New York. Colorado. Illinois and other states.
In California, the new stores will operate under the name “Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store.” They are expected to focus on home organizational products alongside familiar essentials such as bed sheets, pillows and more.
The coupon decision lands in a moment when many people say they had already saved the receipts of a brand that once felt inescapable. Over the last few years, social media users have complained they couldn’t use expired Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. This new push is tied to the Container Store’s own recent history. The Container Store filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and emerged from it in early 2025. Bed Bath & Beyond acquired the Container Store in April for about $150 million in stock and convertible notes. part of its attempt to build momentum after its own bankruptcy.
The political welcome has also come quickly. Gov. Gavin Newsom posted on X in April that California would keep an open door: “With a thriving economy growing faster than all other developed nations, California always reaches out with an open hand — not a closed fist.”
Lemonis framed the partnership around a broader idea of how customers shop at home. “Our customers don’t think about their homes in categories,” Lemonis said in a statement. “By bringing Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store together. we’re creating a destination where customers can buy products. organize their spaces. design custom solutions and access services all under one roof.”.
Even the company’s current campaign is built to make shoppers look harder through their homes. Bed Bath & Beyond is holding a contest to find the oldest coupon out there, offering a home renovation worth $100,000 as the prize.
As the stores reopen, the message to long-saved coupon holders is clear: those pieces of paper that once sat untouched may finally get used—if they make it to the register before July 13.
