Barry rips England display; Bellingham restores lead

England’s assistant Anthony Barry hit out at a “fearful and nervous” first half against Croatia during a direct half-time interview, then Jude Bellingham quickly restored the lead after the restart as the Three Lions went on to win 4-2 in Dallas.

England’s World Cup afternoon in Dallas swung on a half-time fire—and it happened under the brightest spotlight possible.

In an interview with ITV before the second half began, Anthony Barry did not dress up England’s first 45 minutes. He described a “complicated and confusing first half” marked by “a lot of nervous energy early on,” saying the team fell back into “fearful” patterns after twice taking the lead.

It was an opening that had already contained the punishment Croatia can deliver. England had twice gone in front in the first half through Harry Kane, only for Martin Baturina and Petar Musa to level matters each time for Croatia.

Barry’s frustration was sharp. After the second-half restart. with the game still hanging in the balance. he said England had gone ahead and then “fall back into some fearful patterns. ” adding: “From there. then we made some decisions where the energy was not free in our mind. playing long when we should play short. playing short when we should play long. really not playing through the gaps so not allowing us to accelerate our game the way we wanted to.”.

He also pointed to a moment England were expecting to change the feel of the contest. “Then you think the penalty would free us up. allow us to play more like us. look more like ourselves. ” Barry said. before stressing that even after that. England “fall back into some fearful patterns.” He added. “And yeah we’ve always been able to rely on set pieces. ” even as Croatia kept finding ways to drag the match back.

The most telling part came as Barry acknowledged the need to address what had been going wrong before the teams returned to the pitch. “But okay, we concede the second goal later on, and now we have to speak about that at halftime.”

The strange thing for England’s critics to explain away was how fast the response arrived.

Just minutes after Barry’s interview, England went back ahead for the third time. Jude Bellingham—sent clear down the right wing—drove into the box and finished low into the bottom corner past Dominik Livakovic. restoring the lead immediately after the break. England then took over the tempo. enjoying “a long period of dominance. ” and were unfortunate not to extend their advantage further.

Despite that control, the match did not end politely. England ultimately sealed the win late on, going 4-2 after substitute Marcus Rashford fired into the bottom corner with five minutes remaining.

What had looked like a team caught in its own nerves at the half-hour—taking the lead, then slipping back each time—turned into something else once the second-half message was delivered: a quick strike, a longer spell on top, and the scoreline moving from recovery to closure.
