SEATTLE — Folarin Balogun’s World Cup fate swung back in the U.S.’s favor on Sunday night, just in time for what could be the biggest moment of this tournament for the host.
FIFA suspended Balogun’s one-game ban, allowing the striker to play in the United States’ World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium on Tuesday.
Balogun is currently the leading scorer for the Americans with three goals. and the ban suspension lands at a critical time as the U.S. chases a quarterfinal berth for the first time since 2002. The road to that stage has come with painful reminders: the Americans were eliminated in the round of 16 to Ghana in 2010. Belgium in 2014 and the Netherlands in 2022. They failed to advance from the group stage in 2006 and did not qualify for the 2018 tournament.
The ban itself was tied to a sharp incident in the U.S.’s previous match. Balogun received a red card for stepping on the foot of Tarik Muharemović of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Americans’ 2-0 round of 32 win on Wednesday.
FIFA’s decision on Sunday did not erase the underlying punishment. Instead. FIFA said: “The implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.” FIFA added that if Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during that probationary period. “the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”.
That probationary detail matters as much as the immediate clearance. It means Tuesday’s game against Belgium comes with both a chance to move forward—and a warning written into the terms of his return.
With the host set to take on Belgium in the last 16, the U.S. will do it with its leading scorer available again after FIFA suspended the ban. The next 90 minutes will decide whether this is another chapter in a familiar pattern—or the moment the Americans finally break through.
