Backrooms is built on an internet spark. A 4chan thread and YouTube helped feed its transformation into a feature-length horror story. The film follows a therapist who has to locate her missing patient. It’s directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons. in his directorial debut. and it draws inspiration from his YouTube found-footage anthology series.
The movie’s roots trace back to 2019, when a 4chan user encouraged others to share “disquieting” images that hit a nerve. One response included a photo of a yellow-tinged room—resembling the kind of space fans associate with the Backrooms concept, including the version seen in the 2026 horror film.
That original 4chan post didn’t hold back on the sensation it was trying to deliver. It warned that if you’re not careful—if you “noclip out of reality in the wrong areas”—you’ll end up trapped in a place described as “nothing but the stink of old moist carpet. ” “the madness of mono-yellow. ” and the endless hum of fluorescent lights at “maximum hum-buzz. ” adding that you might hear something wandering nearby. because “it sure as hell has heard you.”.
So where does the credits question land? Right at the finish line.
Backrooms does not have either a mid-credits or a post-credits scene. Once the film ends, you can leave the theater.
The cast brings recognizable faces to the nightmare. Backrooms is led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. with Mark Duplass. Finn Bennett. Lukita Maxwell. and Avan Jogia also in the supporting cast. Duplass has most recently starred in The Morning Show and has co-written and starred in the Creep film series and its spinoff series. The Creep Tapes. Finn appears in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Lukita is in Shrinking. and Avan—famous for Victorious—recently starred in 56 Days.
