A billion-dollar sequel doesn’t usually slow down once it leaves theaters. Avatar: Fire and Ash, a new James Cameron release that opened in early December last year, has kept rolling—first at the box office, then on Disney+.

The film, which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide since opening in theaters in early December last year, began its streaming run after Disney’s Upfront presentation in New York. Fans didn’t have to wait long: Avatar: Fire and Ash started streaming on Disney+ on June 24.

Ahead of that date, the franchise had already returned to the spotlight. The first two Avatar installments landed back in the global streaming top 10 before Avatar: Fire and Ash arrived—an early sign that Pandora’s pull wasn’t fading between releases.

Once the latest movie went live, it continued to make noise. Data obtained from FlixPatrol shows Avatar: Fire and Ash dominated the streaming charts on Disney+. The third straight Avatar movie to clear the billion-dollar mark has also placed in the Top 10 in several nations. including the United States. Australia. Canada. Denmark. Spain. and the United Kingdom. extending its reach beyond the big screen.

Cameron’s relationship with massive box office returns has long been established. Titanic, which premiered more than 25 years ago, remains among the highest-grossing movies of all time. In the sci-fi space. Cameron helped define the genre’s blockbuster era too—directing the first two Terminator films. starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. and later staying involved in the franchise as both a writer and producer.

Avatar is where his filmmaking vision became a cultural event. The first Avatar movie premiered in 2009 and was widely hailed as a technological marvel ahead of its time. After years of waiting. Cameron brought audiences back to Pandora in 2022 with Avatar: The Way of Water. and then he moved quickly again for Avatar: Fire and Ash. which debuted at the end of 2025.

That speed—turning the next installment sooner than many expected—has only intensified the question of what comes next for the franchise. Before Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered. Cameron said that for Disney to agree to covering the huge costs of the fourth movie. the predecessor would have to be a hit at the box office. Now. with the sequel already proving itself at $1 billion worldwide and sustaining momentum in streaming top 10 rankings across multiple countries. the pressure point appears to have been answered.

Still, Avatar 4 remains without a title. Cameron has admitted that he must figure out a way to make it cheaper and faster—or pass the reins to someone else.

For now, Avatar: Fire and Ash is streaming on Disney+.

Collider exclusive Sci-Fi Survival Quiz—“Which Sci-Fi World Would You Survive?”—also references the worlds of The Matrix, Mad Max, Blade Runner, Dune, and Star Wars, but the spotlight on Pandora is unmistakably real.

The latest production details underscore the scale behind the comeback: Avatar: Fire and Ash is set for release on December 19. 2025. runs 197 minutes. with James Cameron as director. The writers listed are Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, James Cameron, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. Producers are Jon Landau and James Cameron.

  1. So it’s on Disney+ now? I’m not paying for it twice lol. Thought it would’ve slowed down by now.

  2. June 24 is random, like they timed it after some big promo or something. Also $1 billion “since opening” but then says “after upfront presentation”?? Not sure what part is the real timeline.

  3. I don’t even get why people watch it again, it’s the same planet and same blue people. But I guess streaming charts are rigged? Like FlixPatrol is just guesses, right.

  4. I saw a clip and it looked like all action and no plot, but somehow it keeps hitting top 10 in like every country. Maybe Disney+ is boosting it or whatever. Also they mention Titanic like that proves anything, Titanic did its thing years ago. I’m just surprised it still has traction after leaving theaters.
