At Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the Socceroos are set to begin a new kind of night for Australia’s World Cup story—one with knockout-stage pressure, and one more chance to finally break through.

Australia play Egypt in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ on Saturday. 4 July. with kick-off at 4:00am AEST (1:00pm local) on Friday. 3 July. It’s the first time the two nations meet at a FIFA World Cup. and it’s also the first encounter since a November 2010 friendly in Cairo—when the Aussies lost 3-0.

For the Socceroos, the draw is clear: make this tournament mean something different. They’re chasing their maiden knockout stage win at the major tournament when the teams meet in Arlington.

Australia finished runners-up in Group D after opening with a 2-0 win over Türkiye in Vancouver, then suffering a 2-0 defeat to the United States in Seattle. They followed that with a 0-0 draw to Paraguay to complete the group stage.

Egypt’s path to this matchup has its own sharp edges. The Pharaohs began their campaign with a 1-1 draw to Belgium, defeated New Zealand 3-1, and then played out a 1-1 stalemate with IR Iran to finish second in Group G.

The head-to-head history adds another layer of tension. Australia and Egypt will meet for the third time in their history, with this also marking their first FIFA World Cup encounter. Their last meeting was that November 2010 friendly in Cairo, ending in a 3-0 loss for Australia.

With both sides arriving from different group narratives—Australia as Group D runners-up. Egypt as Group G second—Saturday’s match at Dallas Stadium becomes more than just a Round of 32 fixture. It’s the kind of game where previous tournaments feel far away and the scoreboard decides what comes next.

  1. So Australia is finally gonna beat Egypt for the first time at the World Cup? Seems overdue. I remember that Cairo friendly though, didn’t they lose like 9-0 or something? Either way, I hope they actually show up this time.

  2. They said kickoff at 1:00pm local on Friday and 4am AEST on Saturday… that’s confusing as hell. Either way, knockout stage pressure? Egypt’s probably gonna park the bus. Also Australia only needed a draw to advance right?

  3. I can’t believe the last World Cup meeting is “first time at a FIFA World Cup” but they already played in 2010 so like… what does first time even mean? And SBS free coverage?? Not in my area it isn’t, streaming is always weird. I’m just saying Australia better not lose 3-0 again, because that’s what they do apparently.
