Met Éireann warns: rain returns as heat fades

After a week of unprecedented heat which saw the country bask in near record breaking temperatures, conditions are set to take a dramatic turn this weekend. While most of the country has been out soaking up the sun in recent days as the thermometer hit 31.7C on Thursday, t emperatures are set to plummet from Saturday onwards as cooler and wetter conditions takeover. Met Eireann has said that “the rain will become more persistent and heavier at times” on Saturday afternoon and evening, with the
ptiatneitl fro tempertuers to fall as low as 8C in some areas this evening. The national forecaster has warned that it will b ecome more changeable over the weekend and into next week as we return to a more Atlantic influenced regime, with temperatures also reverting to closer to average values for the time of year. However, we might not have too long to wait until the scorching summer heat returns, with a weather expert revealing that warmer conditions are forecast at the start of
next month. According to Alan O’Reilly , who runs the popular @CarlowWeather channel on X, rain is set to lash most of the country while temperatures will be “well back down today”. However, O’Reilly said current weather models forecast warmer conditions to return to Ireland ” in about 10 days time,” meaning we could see another surge in temperatures around Tuesday, July 7. In a message posted on the @CarlowWeather page on X, O’Reilly said: ” A cloudy start for most with showers pushing up
from Southwest in very strong breeze. “More rain crossing the country later but temperatures well back down today. Weather models showing a chance of warm air returning in about 10 days time.” In a seperate post, O’Reilly said: ” Cloud, rain and wind return Saturday. Total rainfall amounts up to Sunday night generally low for most areas but a few spots over 15mm. Dublin could miss most of it for the gigs but still risk of shower.” Met Eireann has said that while we can
expect some sunny spells over the coming days, changeable and unsettled conditions are also forecast, with persistent outbreaks of rain and drizzle expected this weekend and into the early parts of next week. Saturday – June 27: Cloudier than previous days with patchy outbreaks of rain in the southwest spreading northeastwards across the country through the morning. The rain will become more persistent and heavier at times in the afternoon and evening. Cooler too, with highest temperatures of 17C to 22C generally, warmest in the
midlands, east and northeast, and a little cooler near Atlantic coasts, with moderate to fresh south to southwest winds easing through the day. Tonight : Starting off cloudy with any remaining outbreaks of rain clearing the east coast, before clear spells and scattered showers spread from the west. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 14C, mildest in the east, with light to moderate southwesterly winds. Sunday – June 28 : Sunny spells with scattered showers mainly affecting western and northern areas before dying out through the
evening. Cooler again, with highest temperatures ranging from 15C in the west to 20C in the east, with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, easing later in the day. Sunday night : Mostly dry with clear spells and just a few showers affecting Atlantic coastal areas. Cloud will develop from the west towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 13C, with moderate southwesterly winds. Monday – June 29 : Some sunny spells early in the day with just a few showers, before cloudier conditions with more
persistent outbreaks of rain and drizzle spread across the country from the southwest through the late afternoon and evening. Monday night : Cloudy with outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards across the country through the night. Lowest temperatures of 10C to 13C, with light to moderate southerly winds. Tuesday – June 30 : Starting off generally cloudy and wet. While
the more persistent rain will clear eastwards through the morning and early afternoon with some sunny spells developing, scattered showers will continue through the day.
