Philadelphia will edge out Houston in a low-scoring opener at Citizens Bank Park tonight.

The Philadelphia Phillies are 58% home favorites for the opening game of their series against the Houston Astros ahead of the 6:40 p.m. ET first pitch at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
My top Astros vs. Phillies predictions and MLB picks call for Philly to eke out a low-scoring win in Game 1 of the set tonight.
Who will win Astros vs Phillies today: Phillies moneyline (58.2%)
For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.
The Philadelphia Phillies rank fifth in xwOBA with an average of 4.7 runs per game across the past 30 days, while the Houston Astros rank last in the advanced metric with just 3.8 runs per game.
Promising Philly starter Andrew Painter has also found a groove with two runs or fewer allowed in five of his past seven starts while spinning a tidy 2.98 xERA and limiting opposing hitters to a minuscule 3.8% barrel rate.
Additionally, while Houston righty Hayden Wesneski has only allowed a single run across his past three outings, there’s serious statistical correction coming to his unsustainable .125 BABIP and 92.3% strand rate during the run.
I’d back the Phillies to 59.2%.

Astros vs Phillies Over/Under pick: Under 8.5 (49.8%)
In addition to both Wesneski and Painter pitching well of late, both teams will also have rested bullpens following an off-day ahead of this three-game set.
Even better, the Houston bullpen ranks ninth in xERA and sixth in xFIP since the All-Star break, and Philly relievers respectively check in 11th and 10th.
Add the Astros playing to the Under in 14 of their past 20 games (+7.55 Units / 34% ROI), and I’m anticipating a low-scoring series opener at Citizens Bank Park and would play this Under to 52.4%.
Astros vs Phillies home run prediction: Bryce Harper (19%)
Phillies star Bryce Harper boasts a third-ranked .303 ISO against righties among qualified hitters, and it’s been 10 games since his last homer despite a 40.0% hard-hit rate and going 12-for-36 at the dish.
So, with 23 of his 27 homers coming off of right-handed pitchers, this is a spot for Harper to square one up and leave the yard tonight.
