The A’s come back after a day off with a simple goal: take the whole weekend.

Tonight at Las Vegas Ballpark. Oakland opens a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. a team sitting at 26-43 and already gauging the trade market to see what it can offload on contenders. For Colorado. this weekend is also a chance to sharpen value—especially in a hitter-friendly ballpark that can make certain bats look louder. For the A’s, it’s about control. They’ll be looking for a dominant run against an opponent they’ve been able to separate from on paper.

On the mound. the starting pitcher for the Athletics is rookie left-hander Gage Jump. making his fourth career start and first of many in Las Vegas. He’s been as advertised early—especially in his last two outings. After some debut jitters, Jump has fired off seven innings of one-run baseball against the Chicago Cubs. Then he followed with 6 1/3 shutout baseball against the Houston Astros.

Now the task shifts again: keeping that run going against a Rockies lineup that doesn’t have a lot of big bats. Colorado’s lineup tonight features catcher Hunter Goodman with 18 long balls. and rookie first baseman TJ Rumfield. who is hitting well in his first big league action. Outfielder Troy Johnson is holding his own. Mickey Monika is also part of the picture—but the Rockies come into this series down one of their better hitters.

What makes this matchup even more loaded is the opposing starter.

Colorado’s rookie Sean Sullivan is making his big league debut this evening. It’s a tough place to debut, in a minor league ballpark where the ball absolutely flies. On top of that, he’ll be facing a hot A’s lineup. Sullivan is a former second-round pick and is considered a top-10 prospect in a weak Rockies farm system. In 11 starts in Triple-A this year, he has a 5.60 ERA in the hitter-friendly PCL.

The Athletics’ lineup has its own rhythm tonight, shaped by a roster move made earlier in the day. Shortstop Jacob Wilson is welcomed back to the starting lineup for the first time in a month after he was activated off the IL earlier in the day. The A’s did lose their usual DH Brent Rooker to the IL in exchange for Wilson.

Backup catcher Jonah Heim draws the first start without Rooker. and he could get plenty of at-bats while the regular DH is down. The rest of the order lines up as expected versus a lefty: Colby Thomas over Lawrence Butlsr in right. and Zack Gelof over Jeff McNeil at the keystone. The only lefties in the starting lineup are Nick Kurtz and Tyler Soderstrom, though Heim is a switch-hitter.

The Rockies don’t have many big bats to lean on. but a debut pitcher on a hitter-friendly stage can still turn a game into something unpredictable. The A’s will bet that their early-season sparks keep carrying—especially with Jump’s recent stretch putting them in position to set the tone from the first inning.

For Oakland, the message is clear: they’ve got to take all three of these games this weekend.
