Artists back out of Freedom 250 concert lineup

Freedom 250’s flagship Great American State Fair has rapidly lost most of its announced performers after artists said they expected a non-political event. Six of the nine teased names have stepped down, turning the retreat into an online meme.
For weeks, the plan was already ambitious: a 16-day festival on the National Mall with fair-style exhibits from 56 states and territories, running from June 25 through July 10. The headline attraction was supposed to be the music.
Freedom 250. the nonpartisan group assigned to organize events for 250 years of independence. released a concert series lineup for its flagship event. the Great American State Fair. But less than 48 hours after the lineup announcement. most of the named artists began backing out—fast enough to turn the whole controversy into a running joke online.
The initial teaser promised nine artists playing across various days: Martina McBride, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, The Commodores, Morris Day & The Time, Bret Michaels, and Flo Rida.
As of publication, six have stepped down from performing. Those artists include Milli Vanilli, Martina McBride, Young MC, the Commodores, Morris Day & The Time, and Bret Michaels.
Several performers said they were not told the event would be political. McBride said via social media. “I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading.” Michaels posted a similar message. saying. “unfortunately. what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of.”.
The Milli Vanilli dispute added extra confusion. especially because the band’s name is tied to a long-running public story about its members and vocals. Fab Morvan, one of the two faces associated with Milli Vanilli, confirmed that he will be performing at the event. But the band’s real vocalists said they will not be performing. In a statement posted via X. they said. “Others using the name ‘Milli Vanilli’ that appear on the advertisement should be considered a tribute band with no association vocally or musically to our sound or songs.”.
Not every announced act has followed the same path. While the artist behind C+C Music Factory has not yet backed out. he posted a 7-minute video defending himself from criticism. In that video. he said he “doesn’t fuck with Trump” and also said that connections between the festival and the president were not disclosed to him.
Flo Rida has not spoken out since the wave of dropouts—either in favor or against the festival—and is still slated to appear.
Fast Company reached out to the Freedom 250 task force for comment.
As the lineup thinned, social media users began mocking the churn with fake announcements. On Threads. a user posted. “Marty McFly’s band The Pinheads has confirmed they will NOT be playing the Freedom 250 concert. ” referencing Back to the Future. Another user wrote, “Rick Astley has pulled out of the Freedom 250 concert series. He gave up,” riffing on the “Never Gonna Give You Up” meme. A reply added, “Journey also pulled out. They Stopped Believing.”.
Behind the jokes, the musical retreat has become the story of Freedom 250’s birthday pitch—an event sold as a celebration with nonpartisan messaging, now facing the awkward question artists are raising publicly: what, exactly, were they told they were signing up for?
Freedom 250 Great American State Fair National Mall Martina McBride Milli Vanilli Bret Michaels Flo Rida C+C Music Factory The Commodores Morris Day & The Time Young MC Vanilla Ice United States independence 250th anniversary
So basically they wanted it to be “non political” but then it was politics anyway? Got it.
This is wild, like Flo Rida and Young MC just dipped? I feel like it’s always divisive now, even a concert lol. Also Milli Vanilli in 2026? how is that even a real thing.
I swear it’s the organizers fault for saying it’s nonpartisan and then not being clear. But also I don’t trust “non-political event” in 2024, it’s like saying the sky isn’t blue. Milli Vanilli part is confusing too, because everyone knows that whole whole lip sync drama already, so now we’re supposed to care about this? Meh.
If they were actually misled then yeah that’s messed up, but I saw someone say Milli Vanilli left because they got offended or something? Like nobody even knows what the political angle was, it’s all screenshots and memes. Martina McBride backing out doesn’t surprise me, she’s always been kinda careful. Meanwhile Bret Michaels probably just wanted the payout and then found out the crowd was gonna be “debate-y” or whatever.
