Ariana Grande walked onto the stage at Oakland Arena on Saturday night, June 6, and marked the start of her first tour in seven years with a promise that it wouldn’t just be a greatest-hits night.
The 32-year-old performer launched the Eternal Sunshine Tour in Oakland, where the show was just the first of dozens of sold-out dates she’s scheduled to perform from now through September. She’ll return to Oakland for two more nights—on Tuesday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 10.
Her opening night set reached across her catalogue, pulling songs from nearly every one of her albums. The one notable absence: Sweetener, which didn’t get a song performed during the first show.
Grande also used the debut to spotlight what’s new. “Hate That I Made You Love Me” made its first live appearance with Ariana performing it during opening night.
The tour’s creative direction comes from Christian Breslauer, a frequent collaborator of Grande’s who directed her music videos. In an Instagram story, Breslauer wrote, “The last 8 months have been a dream!. One of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life has been creating this show with the help of so many brilliant people. ” adding that he and Ariana have “put so much love into every single detail” and that he was “excited to say tonight it will finally be yours.”.
Ariana reposted his message and added her own note: “to say it’s been an honor & the most creatively fulfilling time or project we’ve shared yet would be an understatement … i adore. respect and appreciate you so much. we have put our all into this one and i’m so grateful we get to share it with you all tonight at last … happy opening & thank you to you. my brilliant and kind friend and to our incredible eternal sunshine tour family.”.
After Oakland, the tour expands to Los Angeles, Inglewood, Austin, Sunrise, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and London, with multi-date runs at each stop.
