Ariana Grande has released the fiery music video for “hate that i made you love me,” marking the start of her Petal era. Directed by Christian Breslauer and co-starring Justin Long, the surreal story turns into a nightmare of buried memories, a diner where eve
Ariana Grande wasted no time kicking off her Petal era.
On Monday, June 1, she released the music video for “hate that i made you love me,” and it plays like a slow-motion descent—underground, through notebooks of “insecurities,” and eventually into a diner that turns the ordinary into something haunting.
The video is directed by Christian Breslauer. who also directed the Brighter Days Ahead short film—where Grande ended her Eternal Sunshine era by transforming into an elderly woman with makeup and special effects. In this new chapter, the visuals go even harder. Jeepers Creepers star Justin Long co-stars. taking center stage from the opening scenes as he’s seen with a shovel. burying Ariana in an underground bunker surrounded by notebooks featuring her “insecurities.”.
The burial doesn’t end the story—it fuels it. Ariana begins haunting him, appearing as a vision in his car and pushing him toward a breaking point as he slowly goes insane. In one of the video’s most jarring moments, he tries to burn their memories together and accidentally sets himself on fire.
When he staggers to a diner, things get worse in a new way. A waitress named Petal serves him, and the kitchen staff transforms into Ariana. He panics when he realizes everyone in the diner is Ariana. But the attempt to fix it only sends him back underground: he digs up Ariana and goes down in the bunker—only to find that Ariana is outside.
The final scene flips the power dynamic one last time. She buries him.
The song’s mood is already felt in the lyrics Ariana introduced alongside the release, including: “Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me / Sorry if I made me your type / Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me / ‘Cause I barely tried, yeah, I, I, I…”
Weeks earlier, Ariana raved about the track when announcing it to fans. She said, “One of my favorite songs I’ll ever write produced by my favorite collaborators and dearest human beings in the world, the brilliant Ilya, the one and only Max Martin (and me). I simply cannot wait for it to be yours.”
With the video now here, the nightmare world of “hate that i made you love me” is fully on display—bunkers, burn marks, and all.

This is wild lol burying someone in a music video??
I don’t get the point of the diner part like why turn the staff into her… seems creepy for no reason. Also Justin Long with a shovel??
Wait so she’s like burying memories? I thought it was literally about getting buried underground like… real life?? The title sounds like she’s mad at someone for loving her, but the video is just a horror movie mashup
The part where he tries to burn the memories and then sets himself on fire is honestly the most relatable thing ever like dude stop playing with matches. Petal era?? is that like a perfume thing or a new theme? I swear every video has a new branding name now
