For Apple, it’s finally official. The tech giant’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, arrives on Oct. 23.

Apple isn’t the first company to bring a foldable phone to market. Samsung and Huawei have sold folding phones since 2019, and Google debuted its first Pixel Fold in 2023. Samsung debuted its newest foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold8, last month.

Despite a steep price tag – starting at $1,999 – Apple is expected to likely sell every foldable iPhone it can produce in its first wave of shipments and quickly seize about 40% of the global foldables market, according to IDC.

The tech market research firm expects Apple will ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, generating more than $45.7 billion. The high price could eliminate many consumers, suggests a survey conducted by tech news site CNET. While surveyed readers guessed the price would average $1,847, interested buyers said they were willing to spend an average of $781.

Still, 25% said they were interested in a foldable phone, a CNET survey of 2,605 US adults are conducted Aug. 13-17 by YouGov Plc.

That would be a good result for Apple, said Patrick Holland, CNET’s director of content, in a statement accompanying the survey findings. “Foldable phones are niche products, and it’s impressive that 25% might be interested in an Apple folding phone,” he said. “That would be a killer product debut if Apple could get that many people to buy one.”

How to get the foldable iPhone Duo

You can preorder the iPhone Duo starting Oct. 16, but the new phone won’t officially hit shelves until the week after, on Oct. 23. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, with storage capacities ranging from 256 gigabytes to 2 terabytes.

Apple has also designed “some amazing accessories,” including an integrated kickstand and a case that has two parts that wrap around each half to protect against drops and everyday wear, to go along with the phone.
