Apple overhauls Siri with iOS 27’s Siri AI

At WWDC on June 8, Apple introduced Siri AI—an expanded Siri built on Apple Intelligence, with a new standalone Siri app and tighter integration across iOS 27 apps, Spotlight on iPad and Mac, and Visual Intelligence. The update is set to arrive later this year
For many iPhone users, Siri has long felt like a useful tool with limits—something you ask for a task, then move on. At Apple’s WWDC keynote on Monday, June 8, the company tried to change that rhythm.
Apple announced Siri AI, an expanded version of its virtual assistant designed to lean on Apple Intelligence. The upgrade comes with an all new independent Siri app. setting the stage for Siri to play a bigger role than a quick prompt on a screen. Apple’s executives also described Siri AI as capable of working across multiple apps. pulling details from what’s on display. and holding more in-depth chatbot-style conversations.
The message was clear: Siri is being rebuilt to feel less like a one-off command and more like an ongoing assistant.
Apple also tied the Siri update to iOS 27, with changes aimed at giving users more control over Liquid Glass.
Siri AI’s biggest leap is its ability to move through multiple apps in a single thread of conversation. In one example. Apple said a user can ask when an upcoming concert is. then continue in the same conversation to ask how to purchase tickets and to set a reminder for when tickets go on sale. Mike Rockwell. Apple vice president of Siri engineering. said Siri pulls “current world knowledge” while placing the event on the user’s calendar and setting a reminder notification.
That conversational threading matters because it’s where Siri has often struggled: it can be good at small, isolated requests, but harder to carry context from one step to the next. Apple’s new framing suggests the goal is a smoother, more complete experience.
Writing tools and tone detection are also part of the pitch. Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple vice president of software engineering, said Siri AI can “write” using voice-to-text. When drafting an email or text message. Apple said Siri AI can read previous correspondence with the recipient to create an appropriate tone—then continue by supporting writing suggestions for text messages. email. and other written works. even in “most” third-party apps.
Apple gave an example tied to how people communicate with their bosses: it said Siri AI can pick up on the tendency toward short, concise language to craft a message that reads similarly.
Apple also leaned hard on screen awareness. Siri AI can analyze information on screen, according to the keynote. Rockwell described an example involving an Instagram photo: a user can activate Siri while viewing the image and ask where it was taken. From there. Apple said a user can ask whether there are any friends nearby using the Find My app. and can ask Siri to create a road trip that stops at the location shown in the photo and at a pal’s house along the way.
In the Camera app, Apple said users can activate Siri and click the shutter button to get more information about what’s on screen. Rockwell described pointing the iPhone camera at a plate of food and having Siri tell the user the food’s nutritional facts—based on what Siri determines the food is.
The overhaul also changes how Siri’s conversations look and feel. Justin Titi, Apple director of iOS system experience, said that during a conversation with Siri on iPhone, users can swipe down on the Siri pop-up to view a full chatbot conversation transcript.
Alongside that, Apple said users get further customization of Siri’s voice, including pacing and expressivity, and that with the update Siri is supposed to sound more conversational and less robotic.
On iPad and Mac, Siri AI isn’t limited to a standalone assistant window. Apple said Siri AI is integrated into Spotlight, the system-wide search bar on both iPad and Mac. With Siri AI enabled, users can type a question into the Spotlight search bar to have Siri answer.
Apple also said Siri AI on iPad and Mac supports Visual Intelligence—its AI-powered camera and on-screen feature—on first use there. On Mac. for example. Apple said users can use a new keyboard shortcut to select a portion of the screen and then ask Siri a question. The keynote example involved selecting an image of a dessert while browsing and asking for a potential recipe.
All of these capabilities are bundled into a separate Siri app that Apple described as an archive for past conversations. Apple also said photos captured while using Siri will be saved in the app for future review.
Siri AI will be available on devices that support iOS 27. and Apple listed the following: iPhone 16 models or later. iPhone 15 Pro. iPhone 15 Pro Max. iPad mini. iPad models with M1 or later. Mac with M1 or later. Apple Vision Pro. Apple Watch Series 10 or later. Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. Apple Watch SE3.
Craig Federighi, Apple senior vice president of software engineering, said Siri AI will be available to users later this year.
Taken together, Apple’s WWDC announcements show a shift from a Siri that responds to prompts toward one designed to carry threads, read what users are looking at, and keep a record of conversations and related photos inside a dedicated app.
