So often people see the world as a fixed pie – if I give you something, that means I have less. They don’t see that sharing power and opportunities makes the whole pie bigger for everyone!
An article in The NY Times, Basketball analytics corrected decades of bad intuition. Then it created new blind spots, does a good job showing how this works.
And it highlights how being data-driven and focused on individual statistics encourages this kind of zero-sum thinking. It also highlights the success of the teams that don’t buy into it.
