Anne Hathaway says she lived for a decade with legal blindness in her left eye after an early-onset cataract progressed, until she finally had surgery and realized how much her vision had been affecting her.

On The New York Times podcast “Popcast,” the actress told hosts Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli that she spent “a full decade” “legally blind” in one eye. “This is maybe too much information,” she said, then added, “I was half blind for 10 years.”
Hathaway said the problem began as an early-onset cataract that developed sometime between her 30s and 40s—an issue she described as having progressed before she began treatment. A cataract is clouding of the eye’s clear lens. and the Mayo Clinic notes that cloudy vision from cataracts can make it hard to read. drive at night. or see the expression on a friend’s face.
By the time Hathaway began treatment, she said the cataract had already gotten severe. “I was basically legally blind out of my left eye,” she told the podcast. She also described how living with it affected her day-to-day: “the stress of living with it had drained her.”
“I wound up getting surgery,” Hathaway recalled. “And I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.” She said she has felt calmer since then, adding, “I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”
Cataracts are often linked with aging. but both the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic note that younger people can develop them and may still need surgery. The Cleveland Clinic also points out that the Social Security Administration defines legal blindness as severe vision loss—requiring eyesight of 20/200 or worse even with correction. or a field of view of 20 degrees or less.
Hathaway didn’t share the exact measurements of her vision loss. but she made clear that clear sight now feels precious. “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day. I wake up and I get to see the way that I do. it’s a miracle. ” she said. She added that it connects her to people who. decades ago. wouldn’t have had access to the same options: “Oh. two generations back. that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me. So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle.”.
Her account turns a private medical struggle into something more universal: not just what went wrong, but the relief of getting it back—and the awareness of how much weight an unseen problem can carry for years.
