Angels’ Reid Detmers breaks silence after inaccurate trade report

The Los Angeles Angels made a number of moves before Monday’s MLB trade deadline. Moving Reid Detmers was not one of those trades, despite an inaccurate report that surfaced. An insider reported that Detmers was being traded to the Chicago Cubs before later apologizing and retracting the report. On Tuesday, Detmers revealed what he thought in the moment after the inaccurate report was initially released, via Erica Weston.

“Reid Detmers said he called his agent when the report about him being traded came out. There wasn’t a deal. ‘…if it actually did happen, then I figured I’d get a phone call, but I never got a phone call,’” Weston reported.

Detmers was a popular trade candidate in rumors, but a deal never came to fruition. While a number of his teammates were indeed traded to other teams, Detmers is set to remain in Anaheim for at least the remainder of this season.

The 27-year-old has had an up and down overall campaign up to this point, pitching to a 4.03 ERA across 22 starts. He has also struck out 145 hitters in his 125 innings of work on the mound.

The Angels are seemingly finally entering the rebuild they have needed for years now. However, there is no urgency to trade Detmers, who is under contract through 2028. The ball club likely would have needed a jaw-dropping offer to consider moving the pitcher before this year’s trade deadline.

It would not be surprising to see Detmers mentioned in trade rumors again during the upcoming offseason or before next year’s trade deadline.
