Sydney Sweeney is one of the biggest actors in Hollywood right now, and this is despite advertising controversies that trailed her in the past 18 months or so. Sweeney has garnered quite a lot of attention from both her massive hits and her equally big flops (with the likes of Madame Web springing quickly to mind). From the incredible highs of her pairing with Glen Powell in Will Gluck’s Anyone But You, the performer found her stock stalling with credits like Eden, Echo Valley, and Christy. The arrival of her thriller, The Housemaid, which became a global hit, promises a resurgence of sorts, and that is quite promising.
Sweeney has been attached to several exciting titles in the past, with even more on the way, like The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to her R-rated psychological thriller The Housemaid, (her highest-grossing movie to date, earning over $400 million at the box office) and the live-action Gundammovie with Noah Centineo, among others. Impressively, the performer has showcased an incredibly commendable level of versatility which has not confined her to one genre. Be it horror, superhero, drama, and even romantic comedies, Sweeney has delved into every one of them. So it was no surprise when, after the success of Gluck’s Anyone but You, Sweeney decided to appear in a religious horror film that flew under many fans’ radar.
Sinister and bloody secrets plague Sweeney’s nun in Immaculate, which remains one of the actress’ most shocking releases to date. Sweeney’s R-rated horror movie arrived in theaters on March 22, 2024, but is poised for a renewed period in the limelight as it is set to arrive on Netflix in the United States on August 13. The religious horror comes on board as part of the streamer’s wide roster of releases that will join its movie library this month. Immaculate‘s Netflix debut this August comes on the back of additions which include the first seven movies in the action franchise Fast & Furious, Holmes & Watson, multiple Chucky movies, and much more. Immaculate was directed by Michael Mohan, grossing $35 million at the box office against a budget of just $9 million.

‘Immaculate’s Rotten Tomatoes Reception
Putting it mildly, Immaculate is a wild ride and sees Sweeney star as Sister Cecilia, a novice nun invited to join a centuries-old convent in a picturesque part of rural Italy. The horror film operates with a slow pacing that builds up even as things begin to go awry in the Italian convent where Sweeney’s Cecilia finds herself. Immaculate earned a solid 71% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes even as the film sets aside the familiar tropes of demonic possession and exorcism associated with Catholic horror movies. The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “Immaculate in conception if not always in execution, this religiously themed horror outing is saved by a divine performance from Sydney Sweeney.” Immaculate is currently only available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ in the United States and while it has been available before on Netflix overseas, the film has never appeared in North America on the streaming platform.
