By the time you’re done updating, Google wants Android 17 QPR1 developers to stop guessing. With today’s Android 17 QPR1 Beta 6 release, the program has reached Platform Stability—meaning the API surface for developers is locked, so new apps can start building with the latest set of APIs.

The sixth beta is arriving today with build number CP31.260618.005. It’s also another round of fixes, including changes aimed at everyday annoyances and the kinds of glitches people notice right away.

Users couldn’t select multiple spell checker languages, a limitation that’s now been addressed. In the Clock app. pressing the device volume buttons failed to trigger the expected user interface actions. and that problem has been fixed as well. Visual issues didn’t stop there: rapid swiping through the media carousel caused glitches in the Quick Settings layout. including the settings icon. with improvements focused on animation and layout state handling during fast transitions.

Google also tackled app stability. An issue in WindowManagerGlobal that resulted in app crashes is part of this beta’s fixes. And for people who rely on their phone as a hotspot. enabling Wi‑Fi hotspot previously displayed a generic default SSID instead of the user’s saved custom name; Beta 6 addresses that.

Beta 6 is available for the Pixel 6 series. The eligible lineup includes Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9a, Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, 10a, and the Pixel Tablet series devices.

The beta doesn’t just patch. It also adjusts how Android feels in motion and layout. The home screen context menu gets a new design: the spaces between the menu items are gone. and the “Wallpaper & style” label has been moved to the top. The Health Connect app is also expanding what it tracks and stores, adding distance and calorie tracking.

On the desktop side of the experience, taskbar icon placement shifts. In desktop windowing, taskbar icons now appear on the bottom left instead of the bottom center. Picture-in-picture windows also change behavior: in desktop windowing. PiP windows will now float freely. while previously the PiP window would move to either the right or left edge of the screen.

All of this lands at a moment when Google is signaling that developers can treat the API surface as stable—so while users get bug fixes and small interface changes, app makers get the signal they’ve been waiting for.
