Android 17 lands on Pixel phones today

Google has started rolling out Android 17 to compatible Pixel phones today as part of the June Pixel Drop, bringing floating Bubbles, Screen Reactions, new foldable gaming controls, expanded parental controls, and additional Pixel-only features. Not everything

The moment you hit “check for update” on your Pixel today, Google wants it to feel like more than a routine upgrade.

Android 17 is arriving on compatible Pixel phones as part of the June Pixel Drop, after its official debut last month. Google says other manufacturers will be rolling out the update throughout 2026.

The most visible change is the introduction of Bubbles—floating app windows you can open with a long press. Google points out that similar floating windows already exist in many Android skins. but in Android 17 they become a formal. built-in part of the platform. On larger screens. the feature is designed to be more practical. with a dedicated “bubble bar” dock at the bottom of the display to make multitasking easier on foldables and tablets.

There’s also a convenience feature aimed squarely at social media habits: Screen Reactions. It makes it easy to record selfie video while you screen-record, reducing the extra steps that usually come with capturing a reaction clip after the fact.

Gaming on foldables is also getting attention. Foldables will receive new gaming controls that show a touchscreen gamepad on the bottom half of the display, while the game itself sits on top. And across all Android phones, there’s native controller remappping.

Beyond the flashy user interface moves, Google bundled in expanded parental controls and security features as part of the Android 17 update.

Pixel owners also get several extras that are rolling out exclusively on their devices. In the Gemini app. a new Gemini Omni model will be available to create video from text prompts. and Lyria 3 will do the same for music. Quick Share’s reach is expanding as well: AirDrop support through Quick Share is coming to the Pixel 8A and 9A.

Google is also extending Voice Translate for phone calls to the 10A, and Take a Message is set to land on every Pixel from the 6 onward—except in India, where it’s still limited to the 10 series only.

In Google Photos, conversational editing is expanding to the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. Messaging apps will also receive Magic Cue suggestions, though Google didn’t specify which apps are included.

Not everything from last month’s Android Show is showing up in today’s rollout. Google says its Gemini Intelligence features will land later this summer on “select advanced devices.” Those should include the Rambler transcription tool. AI-generated widgets. and expanded Task Automation. Google hasn’t confirmed when other announced features—like redesigned emoji and the Pause Point well-being tool—will receive an official release.

For now. Android 17’s first Pixel wave brings together practical multitasking. quicker social-video capture. new foldable gameplay layouts. and a broader mix of controls and security—plus Pixel-specific Gemini and sharing features. Then. as the calendar turns toward later summer and beyond. the rest of the promised tools will have to wait their turn.

  1. Bubbles sounds cool but I swear Google just renames stuff other Android skins already had. Like why do they always act like it’s brand new? Also screen reactions? isn’t that just… screen recording with extra steps?

  2. Wait parental controls are “expanded” now, but they still let my nephew download whatever game he wants. The announcement sounds nice but I don’t trust it. And Gemini Omni creating video from text… sure, until it turns everything into the same generic AI look.

  3. June Pixel Drop = more floating stuff on my screen, great. I can’t even keep my icons organized now and they’re adding a bubble bar at the bottom like that’ll magically help. Also they said other manufacturers get it throughout 2026 so everyone else is gonna be stuck forever? lol.
