Andersen wins Game 5 as Lemieux’s death hits hard

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen delivered a stirring 6-1 Game 5 win in the Eastern Conference finals while mourning the death of his agent, four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux, who died at 60.

Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots in a 6-1 Game 5 victory that sent the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006. He did it with a heavy heart, hours after the death of his agent, Claude Lemieux.

The moment carried extra weight for Andersen because Game 5 came after Lemieux died at 60 on Thursday. Lemieux had been present in Montreal just days earlier, taking part in the Canadiens’ torch-bearing ceremony before Game 3 at the Bell Centre three days prior.

Andersen’s performance offered no shortcuts for the opponent: he came up with one of his better efforts of the Eastern Conference finals, and the results were decisive. The 6-1 win also marked Andersen’s first trip to the Stanley Cup Final.

In the postgame conversation with TNT, Andersen made it clear how much the loss was on his mind. “I can’t talk enough good things about this team and the way they’ve supported me,” he said. “It’s been awesome.”

Lemieux’s ties to multiple sides of the game complicated the emotions around the day. He identified with the Canadiens—the organization that drafted him and where he won his first Stanley Cup as a rookie. He also had connections to Carolina beyond his work with Andersen. Lemieux’s son, Brendan, played for the Hurricanes during the 2023-24 season.

Before Friday’s game, the Hurricanes paid tribute to Claude Lemieux, underlining how personal the loss was for an organization that had reason to feel it.

Asked what Lemieux would say if he were still here, Andersen responded with a message that sounded simple because it came from someone known for pushing through pressure. His agent would tell him, “Just go get it.”

Andersen described Lemieux as both the competitor and the heartbeat behind the hard work. “He’s the ultimate competitor and he’s got the biggest heart,” the goalie said. “He wanted so much for me and this team.”

Between the tribute and the final whistle of Game 5, one reality was undeniable: Carolina had its moment—while Lemieux, at 60, was gone.
