Clear+ is a third-party. expedited security program that uses iris and fingerprint scanners instead of a photo ID to identify you. With a Clear+ membership. you can enter dedicated checkpoint lanes and input your biometric data into a kiosk. then move to the gray carry-on bins. If you already have TSA PreCheck, you can still use that option.

For cardholders. the real draw is the Amex coverage: if you have an American Express Platinum Card®. the Business Platinum Card® from American Express. the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. or the American Express Green Card®. you can get up to the entire cost of your Clear+ membership covered each calendar year—and possibly part of a family member’s cost as well. Enrollment is required, and the benefit is subject to auto-renewal.

A one-year Clear+ membership typically costs $209. Each of those four cards—Amex Business Platinum. Hilton Honors Aspire. Amex Platinum. and Amex Green—can provide up to $209 in Clear+ statement credits per calendar year. The credit can be used for yourself. and if you already have a Clear+ membership. you can extend this benefit to a friend or family member.

The path to unlocking that credit starts in your American Express account. You must enroll your card to activate the statement credit. and the setup is described as straightforward: log in to American Express. then select your Amex card that includes the Clear+ benefit (if it’s not already your default). At the top, click on the “Rewards and Benefits” icon. On the next screen, click on “Benefits” at the top right to reach a page of tiles explaining each perk.

Find the tile labeled “Clear+ statement credit” and check your status. If you’re enrolled, you’re ready to use the perk. If not, click the icon to activate it.

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards members can earn additional points by signing up for Clear+. Alaska Atmos Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium members receive 1,500 points when they sign up and 1,250 points each year they renew.

Clear+ family options are also part of the equation. Children under 18 can accompany registered adults for free. which means a family could use the program for free or close to it when combining Amex perks and Clear+ discounts. Adding family members who are 18 and older costs $125 per person, up to three family members.

No matter how you enroll. there’s one requirement you can’t skip: you must use your enrolled Amex card to pay for your Clear+ membership (and for your family members’ memberships. if applicable). Amex says the statement credit should appear within two to four weeks. but the article notes that TPG staff have found it typically triggers within one or two days.

If you also hold the American Express® Gold Card and you’re a Clear+ member. the article suggests checking your Amex Offers for a possible deal to earn $99 back as a statement credit after spending $99 or more on Clear Concierge—through July 30. with enrollment required and not everyone receiving the same offers.

  1. I thought Clear+ was only for like people with TSA Pre, but the article says you can still do PreCheck too?? Confusing. Also why is Amex paying for it if it’s not even their program lol.

  2. Wait so if you get the Amex statement credit, you can pay for Clear+ and then you don’t need it after? Like do they stop charging you or is it still auto renew? I’m reading it fast but it sounds like you gotta keep paying either way.

  3. I don’t get why they’re doing iris and fingerprints instead of a normal ID. My cousin said it works better than PreCheck anyway, but I’ve also heard some airports don’t even have the kiosks working half the time. Also $209 a year… am I doing math wrong or is that exactly the credit amount? Either way I’ll probably forget to enroll in my Amex account and lose the perk.
