American Airlines Hikes Checked Bag Fees Amid Fuel Costs

So, American Airlines is officially hiking their checked baggage fees. It’s one of those things that—honestly—nobody wants to hear when they’re already scrolling through booking sites, but here we are. According to Misryoum analysis, the airline is raising the fee by $10 for both the first and second checked bags on domestic and short-haul international routes. It starts this Thursday.
Why? Well, jet fuel prices are just brutal right now. You can practically smell the burnt kerosene if you stand near the tarmac for too long. Misryoum reporting notes that fuel costs have surged from that $85–$90 range we saw in February up to around $209 per barrel globally. A lot of that links back to those tensions near the Strait of Hormuz, which is disrupting a massive chunk of the world’s oil. It’s just the cost of doing business, I guess.
There’s more to it, though. They’re also pushing a $50 increase for a third checked bag, bringing that total to $200. Actually, wait—that pricing was already there for places like Canada, but now it’s becoming the standard.
Then there’s the May 18 changes. If you’re flying basic economy, prepare for another $5 bump on your bags. And you won’t be able to select your seat for free anymore, plus those system-wide upgrades are off the table. It feels like they’re squeezing the bottom line, or maybe just trying to keep the planes running while everything gets more expensive.
It’s a bit of a shift, isn’t it? If you’re sitting in the premium cabins, you’re fine—bags are still free for you. But for everyone else, the math on a quick trip just got a little less friendly. I wonder if this will push more people to just carry a backpack? Probably not, but it’s worth thinking about before you head to the gate.
