American Airlines adds Starlink Wi-Fi for 2027

American Airlines says it will begin deploying Starlink Wi‑Fi in the first quarter of 2027 across more than 500 aircraft, adding a low‑latency satellite option alongside existing providers. The move arrives as multiple major carriers rush to upgrade in‑flight
For years, flying with a “connected” plane has often meant rationing patience—buffers, dead spots, and the quiet disappointment of a slow Wi‑Fi session that never quite arrives.
American Airlines is now committing to a different direction. The carrier says its deployment of Starlink Wi‑Fi will start in the first quarter of 2027. rolling out across more than 500 aircraft. The lineup includes American’s new Airbus A321XLR and A321neo planes. and Starlink will sit alongside existing Wi‑Fi providers—Viasat and SES (previously known as Intelstat).
American isn’t alone in chasing better connectivity. The airline joins a growing list of carriers that have turned to Elon Musk’s Starlink for onboard service. including United Airlines. Southwest Airlines. Lufthansa Group. British Airways. Qatar Airways. Alaska Airlines. and Hawaiian Airlines. Delta Air Lines, meanwhile, recently struck a deal with Amazon Leo for Wi‑Fi connectivity.
The urgency behind these deals is partly technical. Wi‑Fi delivered via low‑earth orbit satellites. like Starlink. tends to bring lower latency because signals travel shorter distances than they would with satellites in geostationary orbit. Viasat uses geostationary satellites, while SES uses a mix of multi‑orbit low‑earth orbit and geostationary satellites.
American frames the change in terms of customer experience. “As a premium global airline. we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want. ” American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a statement. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”.
SpaceX’s own reporting adds another layer to why Starlink is getting so much attention. A recent IPO filing revealed that Starlink is the financial engine of the company. generating roughly $11 billion in annual revenue and acting as its only consistently profitable division. In the filing. SpaceX says Starlink’s global network is designed to eliminate “dead zones” and supports performance on high‑latitude routes that can be challenging for traditional providers.
From the passenger side. the pitch is simple: selecting a seat is easy—getting real internet access on your own device at cruising altitude is the hard part. Select video content and Spotify can help pass the time. but the promise many travelers want is straightforward: working connectivity that doesn’t collapse the moment the plane leaves the ground.
