Alonso homers, Baz shuts down Red Sox 4-2

Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer and Shane Baz pitched seven strong innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Tuesday night, winning their third straight and ending a three-game road skid.

BOSTON — The Orioles didn’t just bounce back in enemy territory; they did it with the kind of control that turns Fenway into a quiet place. Pete Alonso cleared the bases with a two-run homer in the third inning. and Shane Baz kept Boston from stringing hits together long enough for Baltimore to take a 4-2 victory on Tuesday night.

Alonso’s swing landed his 12th home run of the season. It came off Connelly Early (5-3) on a 2-2 pitch, sailing well over the Green Monster in left field to put Baltimore up 3-1. The first baseman now has 38 RBIs.

On the mound, Baz delivered a steady follow-through after Boston tested him early. He fell behind immediately in the first inning when he allowed a leadoff triple to Jarren Duran. but from there he tightened his grip. Baz held the Red Sox without another hit until the fifth inning and then retired 10 straight batters as the game settled into a battle of timing and patience.

For the night, Baz pitched seven innings for a second straight start, allowing four hits and striking out six. The result was his consecutive wins for the first time this season, bringing his record to 3-5.

Coby Mayo added damage at the plate for Baltimore as well. He tied the game at 1-all in the second inning with his seventh homer of the season. a drive to the top of the Monster that was initially called a double before a video review overturned it. Mayo’s homer set the tone early for Baltimore’s push.

In the first inning, Gunnar Henderson’s double to left extended his streak of reaching base safely at Fenway Park to 23 games, matching the number of times he has appeared at the ballpark.

Boston’s scoring came late and in pieces. Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer drove in the Red Sox runs on sacrifice flies, and Rico Garcia struck out two in the ninth for his fourth save to finish the job.

Early’s outing ended with 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

The Orioles won for the third straight time and ended a three-game road skid. Boston dropped to 9-20 at home.

Wednesday’s matchup sets up another clean contrast on paper: Baltimore RHP Chris Bassitt (4-3, 5.06 ERA) faces Boston LHP Payton Tolle (2-2, 2.61) as the series continues.
