The hunt begins with urgency: Milly Alcock’s Kal-El cousin is on a mission to track down a villain named Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) before an antidote can save her beloved dog Krypto from poison. But once the music kicks in, ‘Supergirl’ also delivers a soundtrack that feels stitched from both now and then.

Craig Gillespie. known for ‘I. Tonya. ’ directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. with Alcock starring alongside Matthias Schoenaerts. Eve Ridley. David Krumholtz. Emily Beecham. and Jason Momoa. And while the movie’s vibe skews modern, Gunn’s DC Films era doesn’t completely leave the classics behind.

Next up for DC is ‘Clayface,’ a smaller-scale body horror movie opening in theaters in October from director James Watkins. It remains to be seen whether that film leans just as hard into recognizable tracks or leans more on score—but the Gunn-directed ‘Superman’ sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’ (hitting theaters in 2027) is positioned to be packed with jukebox hits.
