Airbnb rebuilds its app with AI, hotels, services

Airbnb app – Airbnb unveiled a major app overhaul that adds an AI assistant, a redesigned homepage, new travel service categories, and the ability to book rooms at boutique or independent hotels—pushing the platform further from stays-only booking into full trip planning.

When Airbnb sent its app team back to the drawing board, it wasn’t just refining a booking screen. On Wednesday, the company rolled out what it called several new features and offerings, tying together stays, planning tools, and trip services in a single experience.

The changes include a redesigned homepage and new service categories that reach well beyond where guests sleep. Travelers will be able to book airport pickups and add grocery-delivery options, along with luggage-storage and car rentals. Airbnb also expanded its experiences offering, and—most notably—added the ability to book rooms at boutique or independent hotels.

That direction lands with a touch of irony. Airbnb built its early reputation as an alternative to traditional hotels. Now, it’s folding boutique and independent hotel rooms into its platform.

Jud Coplan, Airbnb’s VP of product marketing, put the nostalgia plainly: “It’s funny how it comes full circle. We’re adding boutique hotels, and Airbnb all started with an air bed.”

Airbnb says the center of the overhaul is making trip planning easier and more inspiring, not simply getting people to find a place to stay. Coplan described the goal as helping users organize and plan an entire trip on the platform, with features designed to support future travel as well.

Several of the new options were added after user feedback, Coplan said, as more people wanted to use Airbnb for other parts of their trip rather than only lodging. The company points to practical add-ons such as booking a private car for airport transfers and finding a place to store luggage.

Airbnb also added social elements: users can add friends or family members as connections to see their previous itineraries. And the app will include an AI assistant feature. Later this year, Airbnb plans to incorporate a travel map so users can see nearby points of interest, among other things.

The company isn’t making this move in a vacuum. Airbnb is facing rivals that are also pushing into broader “everything” travel and lifestyle apps. Coplan referenced Uber’s recent announcements. including hotel bookings and Travel Mode. as examples of how other platforms are trying to move beyond their original services.

Coplan’s response was that Airbnb’s differentiation comes from how the platform is built around the people who host and provide experiences. He said the unique offerings—and the company’s focus on curated experiences and other services—are what can set it apart.

“The things we offer, we have a very unique perspective on them, in that they’re provided by people, by hosts, and you can’t get the same experience anywhere else,” Coplan said. He also framed Airbnb’s approach as a guided journey rather than a marketplace that simply aggregates inventory.

Coplan argued that Airbnb is “put[ting] everything together in a travel app that feels different. ” describing it as “a thoughtful. well-designed journey through the app.” He contrasted that with traditional hotels and tourist attractions. pointing out that most hosts’ experiences vary from each other.

“We’re not just trying to pipe in an API and get as many hotels on the platform as possible,” Coplan said.

Airbnb’s expansion started last year when it introduced Services and Experiences to the platform. Coplan said the company is taking that expansion further this year. maintaining the same core idea: hosts and people provide the offerings. and Airbnb’s role is to help turn them into a seamless trip plan.

For Airbnb. the overhaul is more than a feature update—it’s a bid to become a trip platform that covers the gaps between booking a stay and actually getting things done. With AI. social planning tools. a map. and hotel booking options now in the mix. the app is moving into the space travelers have long used multiple services to cover.
