Smoke from wildfires that started last week is still hanging over Miami-Dade County, keeping officials and residents under an air quality alert that runs through Thursday afternoon.
The Miami-Dade County Division of Environmental Resources Management says the alert remains in effect until 3 p.m. Thursday, June 25, and covers all of Miami-Dade County. The National Weather Service reports that the ongoing smoke is continuing to affect air quality.
People who are especially sensitive to particle pollution are being urged to reduce their activity levels and limit the length of time they spend outdoors. The guidance also includes checking local conditions through the AirNow webpage.
Officials also warned drivers to be alert for changing visibility. Visibility, the notice says, can “change suddenly over short distances,” a risk that can be especially dangerous when smoke thickens.
The wildfires contributing to the smoke are located across several parts of the county and have been steadily contained over recent days, according to maps of active wildfires provided by the Florida Forest Service.
The Quarry 2 Fire, which began on June 15, is located near NW 137 Avenue and NW 41 Street. As of 1:26 p.m. June 21, it had grown to 19,018 acres and was 97% contained.
The Well Fire started on June 16 and is located near NW 122 Avenue and NW 58 Street. As of 9:59 a.m. June 23, it had burned 2,814 acres and was 85% contained.
Another incident, the Corrections Fire, is located south of 8th Street and west of Krome Avenue. As of 5:15 p.m. June 23, it had burned 363 acres and was 90% contained.
With the alert stretching into Thursday, residents who are sensitive to particle pollution are being pushed to adjust day-to-day plans. Checking AirNow and staying prepared for abrupt visibility changes while driving are among the key steps highlighted by officials as smoke continues to affect the area.

So it’s still smoky?? Thursday can’t come fast enough.
My kids are supposed to be outside today but like… smoke alert til 3 pm?? I didn’t even know there was fires in Miami until now. This is crazy.
Isn’t this like the county doing controlled burns or something? They say “wildfires” but it started last week so I’m guessing it’s just planned smoke to clear land. Either way my AC is basically a liar.
Drivers need to watch visibility changing suddenly… yeah okay, I drive from Hialeah to work and it’s already hard to see through regular Miami haze. They keep saying check AirNow but the page never loads on my phone half the time. Also “sensitive groups” like asthma folks, fine, but what about allergies?? Quarry 2 fire and Well fire and all that, just tell people to stay inside and stop making it sound like it’ll behave.
