New witness to continue Aeroton bust testimony this Monday

The Madlanga Commission is expected to continue with testimony from a new witness this Monday morning. The Commission is expected to hear evidence relating to the Aeroton drug bust that occurred in the south of Johannesburg in 2021. Evidence before the Madlanga Commission has shown that three police officers, including a traffic officer, were first on the scene when the consignment was intercepted. Last month, Hawks’ Gauteng Organised Crime Unit Commander, Colonel Francois Steyn, accused members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) of interfering

with investigations. The operation resulted in the seizure of 715 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of R300 million, making it one of the largest drug interceptions in the province. Testifying on the matter, Colonel Steyn revealed that no arrests have been made to date, raising serious concerns about alleged obstruction and delays in bringing those responsible to book. The conduct of officers at the scene show that both teams ignored the proper procedures when handling drugs. Evidence before the Madlanga Commission reveals

that the rip on/rip off method of drug smuggling in South Africa requires law enforcement officers to be complicit. VIDEO | Steyn alleges SAPS members interfered with Aeroton drug bust investigation
