MILWAUKEE — The outfield shift started fast, and it started with Adolis García leaving the scene in Toronto.

Two days after exiting Wednesday’s series finale against the Blue Jays. the Phillies placed right fielder Adolis García on the 60-day injured list with a right latissimus dorsi tear. It’s the kind of injury that changes daily life in a lineup—who plays. who rests. and how much the team can lean on a proven arm when it matters most.

To fill the space, Philadelphia added two names to the roster: Derek Hill and prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. Another outfield vacancy opened when fellow outfielder Steward Berroa was placed on the paternity list.

Derek Hill arrived after being acquired from the White Sox on Thursday. Hill, 30, is a veteran right-handed hitter who batted .213 with four home runs, eight RBIs and a .659 OPS in 50 games this season with Chicago.

Rincones is Philadelphia’s No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He’s 25, a left-handed hitter who has been limited to 22 games this season following offseason leg issues.

There’s still uncertainty about how the Phillies will distribute García’s reps in the coming months. but the recent additions make a platoon possibility feel realistic. Hill also brings specific numbers against left-handed pitching. hitting .245 with a .789 OPS against left-handers this year. and a .780 OPS against southpaws for his career.

Hill’s versatility could matter, too. He could see time in center field, with Brandon Marsh set to play every day in left. Meanwhile, rookie center fielder Justin Crawford has been handed opportunities already, batting .232 with a .623 OPS—but he has hit .143 with a .356 OPS since May 16.

For Rincones, last season’s production offers a sharp reminder of what the Phillies are hoping to get quickly. He slashed .240/.370/430 (.800 OPS) with 18 home runs for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but most of the damage came against right-handers. All 18 of his home runs were hit versus righties. and he batted .261 with an .873 OPS over 441 plate appearances in those matchups. Against lefties, he hit .107 (.6-for-56) with zero extra-base hits.

That matters because García’s injury arrives at a difficult point for both player and team. Signed to a one-year. $10 million deal this offseason. García has struggled offensively. hitting .195 with seven home runs and a .599 OPS this season. Three of those homers had come in the week prior to his injury—one of those brief surges that can make the timing feel especially cruel.

Still, the Phillies have leaned on García in the field. Despite his offensive struggles, he had continued to play solid defense in right field while showcasing his elite arm strength. That changed on Wednesday. when García came up holding his right shoulder after attempting to throw out Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer on a sacrifice fly.

As soon as it became clear García would miss significant time, Philadelphia began making moves. Prior to acquiring Hill, the Phillies’ only healthy outfielders on the 40-man roster were Rincones, Otto Kemp and Felix Reyes. Kemp and Reyes have struggled in part-time roles this season. which is why the Phillies kept them at Triple-A so they can get everyday reps.

The timing of all this is tight in another way. García’s injury came on the same day it was announced that outfielder Johan Rojas—who was nearing the end of his 80-game suspension for PEDs—will soon undergo season-ending UCL surgery on his right elbow.

Now, with the Phillies set to open their Friday series against the Brewers at American Family Field, the outfield picture has been redrawn in just a few days—by injury, by roster logistics, and by the simple reality that games keep coming.
