Adam Wingard. known for shifting from microbudget launches to mainstream breakouts like “You’re Next” and “The Guest. ” is now teaming up with A24 on the original thriller “Onslaught. ” reuniting with frequent co-writer Simon Barrett. The story centers on a single mother living in a trailer park. where a mysterious threat appears after something escapes from a neighboring military base.
The film’s cast reads like a full-throttle genre reunion. Adria Arjona leads as the woman forced into a fight for survival, joined by Dan Stevens, Alex Pereira, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Rebecca Hall, Eric Wareheim, Maurice Greene, and Reginald VelJohnson.
A brief official synopsis keeps the premise sharp and explosive: “When a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers break loose in the desert. a badass Army sniper must unleash hell to protect her young daughter.” It’s a setup built for escalating dread—one that immediately raises the stakes for the person at the center of the chaos.
In a recent interview promoting Netflix’s “The Terror,” Stevens teased the project and praised both Wingard’s creative streak and Arjona’s performance. He described the film as a return to the kind of momentum that first helped define Wingard’s reputation.
“Ultimately, it’s Adam Wingard back on form, returning to a batshit action-thriller in the desert, which is where I first met him and fell in love with him,” Stevens said. He added that Arjona is the heart of the movie’s impact.
“This time, Adria Arjona, who is incredible, is our lead and has done an amazing job. People are going to really enjoy what she’s brought to that movie, I won’t say any more than that. But my contribution is, typically, bonkers.”
Wingard’s career has also included some high-profile studio adaptations—projects like “Blair Witch,” “Death Note,” and “Godzilla vs. Kong. ” with varying results—so the question hanging over “Onslaught” is simple: will this original A24 thriller deliver the same hit-of-energy that fans associate with Wingard at his most unpredictable?.
The answer may come from the way Wingard is already looking beyond this release. While he’s currently back in indie territory, he’s not closing the door on the Monsterverse. He previously told IndieWire he’s hoping to direct a third movie with Godzilla and King Kong that would follow up on the events of “The New Empire.” In 2024. Wingard said: “I know what I would like to do with the next one.” He followed it with: “There’s definitely more ground to cover.”.
For now, the focus stays locked on “Onslaught.” An A24 release, the film opens in theaters on Friday, September 4. The trailer is already out—letting the threat arrive first, and the answers come later.
