MILAN — The boos came after another home loss, and by Monday, AC Milan’s response had moved from the stands to the boardroom.

Massimiliano Allegri and CEO Giorgio Furlani were fired after RedBird ruled the season had ended in what it called “an unequivocal failure.” The decision landed one day after Milan missed out on a Champions League berth by a single point. following a chain of setbacks that began with a blown advantage: Milan had a 1-0 lead. then finished without qualification. losing at home to also-ran Cagliari 2-1. Their own fans booed the team off the field.

For much of Serie A, Milan looked like a title contender. The club spent long stretches in the top two positions and fought for the championship. But the final weeks told a different story. After a run of only two wins in its last eight matches. Milan slipped to fifth place on Sunday. the last day of the season.

RedBird’s statement pulled no punches. “The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure,” it said.

Then came the shake-up, announced with immediate effect. RedBird said it was ending its partnership with CEO Giorgio Furlani. sporting director Igli Tare. head coach Massimiliano Allegri and technical director Geoffrey Moncada. while thanking each of them for their “hard work and dedication” during their respective tenures.

Only one major figure remained. RedBird will keep special adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Allegri’s return to Milan came last year, with a clear assignment: take the Rossoneri back to the Champions League after Milan finished eighth in Serie A the previous season. In his spell, Allegri oversaw 42 matches, delivering 22 victories, 10 draws and 10 defeats.

Now, the next steps are expected to be shaped around Ibrahimovic and the club’s ownership. RedBird managing partner Gerry Cardinale is expected to work closely with Ibrahimovic to restructure the club’s football operations, including choosing a coach, CEO and sporting director.

The statement ended with a promise of more changes to come: “Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course — with the goal to be ready and well prepared for the next season.”
