Absolute Batman Animated Series Set at Annecy Panel

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced an all-new animated series adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s “Absolute Batman” at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with Snyder set as executive producer and showrunner.

A long, billowy cape didn’t just earn gasps at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival—it helped signal a major new chapter for one of Batman’s biggest reinventions.

During a DC/Warner Bros. Animation panel at the festival, “Absolute Batman” was revealed as coming to television. The best-selling comic book series is now in development as an all-new animated series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, with Scott Snyder serving as executive producer and showrunner.

The comics that sparked this push have already proven they can draw a crowd. “Absolute Batman,” written by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta, has sold more than 6 million copies. Its first issue reached an unprecedented 11th printing.

The title is also central to DC Comics’ Absolute Universe publishing initiative. which includes “Absolute Superman. ” “Absolute Wonder Woman. ” and “Absolute Green Lantern.” Each series brings a unique take on the classic heroes and villains from the mainline DC Universe. In 2025, all of the “Absolute” titles—including “Absolute Batman”—were among the 10 best-selling comic books of that year.

The official synopsis frames the animated adaptation’s tone as something more stripped down and confrontational than familiar Batman stories. It describes “Absolute Batman” as “boldly reinvents the Batman mythos for a new generation of fans. ” reimagining the Dark Knight as “a working-class hero up against impossible odds. ” with a mission built around the idea that “even in an era of wealth. power and corruption. one good person can change the world.”.

It adds: “No manor, no money… all Batman. When you take away the manor, the money, the advantages, what you’re left with is something absolute.”

At the panel, the producers didn’t just talk about the concept—they showed it. A model of the Absolute Batman character. with his long. billowy cape. broad shoulders. and spikes. was displayed with a 360-degree turnaround. drawing the kind of reaction you usually only hear when a design feels finished enough to belong on the big screen.

Snyder’s involvement adds another layer of expectation for fans of modern Batman storytelling. He’s been a major architect of DC Comics in the years since he began writing “Batman. ” and is often ranked alongside other influential names such as Grant Morrison. Snyder’s “Court of Owls” story arc began in 2012. and his broader work has included writing “Swamp Thing” and “Justice League. ” along with spearheading multiple cross-title initiatives.

Right now, no timeline or outlet has been named for the series, which remains in development. But with “Absolute Batman” already powered by blockbuster comic sales and a publishing universe built to stand apart from the mainline. the next question is no longer whether audiences will show up—it’s when this reinvention will finally reach television.
