Fifty years ago. when floppy disks were still cutting-edge and the personal computer revolution had barely started. The Washington Post tried something audacious: map what everyday life might look like in 2026. The effort came from science editor Thomas O’Toole. and the exercise has now returned—re-read against reality. with the verdict both humbling and oddly reassuring.
The retrospective was published for America’s 250th anniversary. It revisited O’Toole’s 1976 article, *Inventing the Future*, and weighed its forecasts against today’s technological reality. The newspaper’s finding is less about perfect guessing and more about something harder to achieve: catching long-term scientific direction while timelines remain nearly impossible to nail.
O’Toole’s solar bet mostly held. He expected solar power to become a major energy source, while also arguing commercial fusion power would remain decades away. Today, solar energy accounts for a significant share of new electricity generation in the United States. Fusion, meanwhile, has continued to draw billions in investment but still hasn’t reached commercial deployment.
Some of the “connected world” prediction feels almost eerily familiar. O’Toole imagined phone calls traveling through optical fibre instead of traditional copper cables. He couldn’t have predicted smartphones, social media, or mobile apps. But the larger idea of a world built on mobile communications did arrive. Today’s smartphones are the primary gateway to communication, commerce, entertainment, and information for billions of people worldwide.
Even in medicine, several forecasts landed closer to reality than they had any right to. O’Toole wrote about genetic engineering transforming healthcare long before technologies such as CRISPR existed. Today, gene editing is being used in research and experimental treatments. Still, editing human embryos remains highly controversial after the widely condemned case of a Chinese scientist in 2018.
He also predicted that Americans would live longer—and that has proved accurate. Average life expectancy has reached a record high in recent years. helped by medical advances. better treatments. and improved disease prevention. The retrospective doesn’t hide the limits of progress, noting that new public health challenges continue to emerge.
But not everything made the trip from 1976 to 2026 intact. O’Toole’s nuclear-powered artificial hearts were one example. The vision was that such hearts would become commonplace. Instead. modern medicine has leaned toward improving heart health through drugs. minimally invasive procedures. and experimental organ transplants. including genetically modified pig organs. Artificial hearts remain rare rather than routine.
He also reached for deep-sea mining decades before it became a global policy debate. The technology exists now—companies have the ability to mine the ocean floor. Yet environmental concerns continue to slow adoption, as scientists warn of potentially irreversible damage to marine ecosystems.
The biggest dream that hasn’t happened yet was permanent human settlement beyond Earth. Humanity still hasn’t established colonies on the Moon or Mars. Even so, the retrospective points to companies such as SpaceX continuing to pursue long-term exploration and settlement plans.
The through-line in the retrospective is sharp: forecasting technology isn’t really about naming the exact product that will win. O’Toole didn’t foresee the iPhone, ChatGPT, or cloud computing. What he did do was identify scientific directions that could shape the following half-century.
Looking back from 2026, the surprise isn’t that some predictions missed their mark. It’s that so many came close at all—written at a time when artificial intelligence, the internet, and smartphones were still distant enough to belong to imagination rather than daily life.
