By the time the final outs fell in Los Angeles, the milestone had already landed—and it landed fast.

Dave Roberts took a major step in MLB history on Tuesday, June 30, reaching 1,000 wins with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 9-3 victory over the Athletics. The game carried a record-setting edge: Roberts became the fastest manager to reach 1,000 wins in the league.

Roberts compiled a 1,000-606 record, reaching the 1,000-win mark in fewer games than Cap Anson, whose 1,000 wins came in 1,641 decisions. Roberts earned every one of his managerial victories with the Dodgers.

His path to 1,000 wins began long before Los Angeles fans began to expect it. Roberts served as interim manager for the San Diego Padres on June 15, 2015, after the Padres fired Bud Black. In that period, San Diego suffered a 9-1 loss to the Athletics at Petco Park. Pat Murphy was then hired as interim manager for the rest of that season.

Roberts was hired by Los Angeles in 2016, and he finished that season as the Manager of the Year after leading the Dodgers to a 91-71 record. Since then, his résumé with the franchise has stacked up: he has won three World Series titles and five National League pennants during his tenure.

The day also brought its own kind of interruption for baseball—one that had nothing to do with standings and everything to do with family.

MLB player Lars Nootbaar was surprised by his mom during a live interview, with tears flowing as the moment aired. It was an emotional scene playing out alongside the on-field milestones and the routine rhythm of a regular-season game.

The sequence of Roberts’ career details has a clear shape: interim work with the Padres after Bud Black’s dismissal. an eventual full-time role with the Dodgers. then a run of wins that now places him ahead of every other manager in how quickly he reached 1. 000. The numbers are the headline, but the timeline makes the pace feel personal.

For Dodgers fans, the focus now shifts to the next game. The Dodgers will play the final game of a three-game series against the Athletics on Wednesday, July 1. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. PT.

  1. I thought Cap Anson was the Dodgers guy?? guess not. Either way 1,000 wins is insane, man. Also the mom surprise thing was way more emotional than baseball should be.

  2. Wait so he got 1,000 wins faster than everyone but it says he earned them all with the Dodgers… so did he manage the Athletics at all or am I mixing it up. And June 30 is also like halfway through the season right? feels early to be talking records

  3. This article is kinda all over but yeah congrats. Bud Black got fired and then Roberts just magically becomes the fastest? I know baseball is numbers but a Petco Park 9-1 loss sounds like karma went in the wrong direction first lol. Meanwhile Lars Nootbaar mom popping up on TV was the real headline in my house.
