Justene Alpert, known for 9-1-1, says doctors urged her to terminate her pregnancy after discovering a rare genetic disorder that made carrying the baby dangerous for both mother and child.

The actress—popular for her work including “Rescue: HI-Surf. ” “How I Met Your Mother. ” and “9-1-1″—says she and her husband. Mason Trueblood. were just starting to share the pregnancy with friends and family when their family doctor called. She says it happened in December, as they were preparing to tell people.
Instead, she says doctors told her they highly recommended she end the pregnancy quickly. Alpert doesn’t name the specific disease her unborn baby was diagnosed with, but she says the genetic condition was rare and that doctors made clear the child would not make it to term.
In her Instagram post shared Tuesday, Alpert describes the warning as something that centered on her safety as well as the baby’s. She says doctors advised termination because carrying the child was dangerous for both of them.
A few weeks later, Alpert says she went through with the procedure. She writes that the decision left her and her husband with feelings of shame and guilt—an emotional cost she doesn’t soften or hide.
