A set of numbers sprawling across the National Mall brought investigators out the next morning.
On Thursday. June 11. large markings of “8647” appeared on the grass of the west lawn. a location visible from the Washington Monument and placed only days before President Donald Trump’s birthday. U.S. Park Police opened an investigation after officers responded to the National Mall at around 11:30 a.m. local time to assess a tracing of the numbers “8647” on the lawn.
Photos taken from the top of the Washington Monument showed the digits “8” and “7” more clearly. while “6” and “4” were visible but more faintly. Park Police said the cause of the discoloration had not yet been determined. In a statement to Reuters. the agency said grass samples have been collected for testing. and that the investigation is ongoing.
The timing adds pressure. The National Mall is set to host events celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. and only weeks later it is expected to host a 16-day “Great American State Fair.” In that setting. any unexplained markings on the grounds immediately become more than a local oddity.
The incident lands amid a familiar controversy around “8647.” In April. former FBI Director James Comey was indicted for a second time over a social media post he shared in 2025. In a since-deleted picture on Instagram, Comey posted the number 8647 formed by seashells on a beach. The post drew outrage from members of the Trump administration at the time. who described it as a veiled threat against Trump.
A separate legal fight also fed the debate. On June 1. a federal judge granted the Washington. DC. chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union’s request for a restraining order in a free speech lawsuit against the National Park Service. The ACLU alleged that a U.S. Park Police officer asked a protester to take down an “8647” flag, arguing it suggested a threat against Trump.
What people think the numbers mean has varied, but the interpretation is often the same. The chain of numbers has been read by some as “86” No. 47—an allusion to Trump being the 47th president. Merriam-Webster says “86” is used as a colloquial term meaning “to throw out. ” “to get rid of. ” or “to refuse service to.”.
The term’s origin is disputed. One theory ties it to a former New York bar called Chumley’s at 86 Bedford St. where barkeeps allegedly used “86” to throw disorderly guests out. Another version. cited in the book “The History and Stories of the Best Bars of New York. ” suggests that during Prohibition. police would call Chumley’s bartenders to “86” their patrons out the 86 Bedford door so they wouldn’t have to arrest them.
Merriam-Webster also points to a different possibility: the term may have come from 1930s soda-counter slang meaning an item was sold out, and could have originated from “nix,” a phrase still used by wait staff in restaurants and bars.
The through-line—markers on public grounds. official responses. and court challenges—has created an unusually tight loop around “8647.” This time. Park Police collected grass samples and kept the focus on what’s on the Mall itself: the cause of the discoloration hasn’t been determined. and the investigation remains ongoing.

Why would anyone write 8647 on the lawn… like what even is that.
That’s literally right near Trump’s birthday timing, so of course people are gonna call it some kind of threat. But I don’t even get what 8647 means in the first place. Grass discoloration though?? they really had to sample it like it’s a crime scene.
I saw 8647 was from that Comey seashell thing right? So now they’re acting surprised like it’s not connected. It’s probably just some dude with markers or fertilizer or whatever, and everyone makes it political because it’s Washington. Also how do you see 6 and 4 “faintly” from the Monument?? seems kinda made up.
They’re investigating because the numbers were visible from the Washington Monument?? So the solution is just… don’t look at it from above? lol. And of course it’s “only days before Trump’s birthday” like that’s proof. Next thing you know they’ll blame the state fair or the independence celebration or something. I guarantee it’s just a prank, but they’ll still drag it out for weeks.
