25 Actors Who’ve Gone MIA—And What They’re Doing

actors who’ve – From Julia Stiles to Meg Ryan, here’s how 25 familiar faces stepped back from the spotlight—and what their careers and lives look like now.
Hollywood loves a comeback story. but a quieter truth runs underneath the spotlight: some stars step away on purpose. and others just drift into lower visibility. For actors once everywhere in the public eye. “MIA” can mean anything—from choosing smaller roles to pivoting entirely. or simply taking time to reclaim their life.
Julia Stiles. a romance queen around the turn of the millennium. is far less visible than she was after starring in cult hits like 10 Things I Hate About You. Save the Last Dance and The Prince & Me. These days. she hasn’t disappeared completely—she’s continued to appear in Bourne movies and in a few more low-profile roles.
Eva Mendes also scaled back from the kind of major visibility that came with films like Hitch and Ghost Rider. Her Hollywood hiatus now gets punctuated mainly by voice work for cartoon characters or appearances in commercials. Instead, Mendes has focused on parenting the children she shares with Ryan Gosling, along with her other work.
Tobey Maguire is another name that feels less constant than it used to. After the original Spider-Man film series. the actor “almost dropped off the face of the earth.” While he’s been much less visible since hanging up the spider suit. Maguire has still shown up for odd roles—most notably in 2013’s The Great Gatsby—and he also had a cameo in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s additionally been working as a prominent Hollywood producer.
Not every MIA story is about disappearance. Brendan Fraser’s career, for example, seemed to take a dramatic nosedive after his ’90s success with The Mummy franchise—until he returned as a headline presence in 2022’s The Whale. For that role, Fraser won the Oscar for Best Actor.
Cameron Diaz’s “gone” moment arrived with a clear pause. Circa 2014. she decided to step away from the Hollywood routine for a long break. before returning to acting about 10 years later. In 2024, Diaz looked back on that quasi-retirement decade, saying, “For me, it was just something I had to do. It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else.”.
Geena Davis, meanwhile, didn’t fully vanish so much as shift her volume downward. After playing one of the titular characters in 1991’s Thelma & Louise—followed by big film runs like A League of Their Own and Stuart Little—many of her later roles became smaller and less high-profile. She has worked as a producer too. but her focus has also moved toward behind-the-scenes advocacy through the Geena Davis Institute. which aims to bring more equity into on-screen representation.
Josh Hartnett described a deliberate choice behind his reduced presence. After being an A-lister in the 2000s, he stepped back by refusing big blockbusters and opting for smaller roles. “I just didn’t want my life to be swallowed up by my work,” he told The Guardian in 2024. He added that there was a notion at the time “you just kind of give it all up. ” and that he’d seen what happened to some people—“They got obliterated by it. I didn’t want that for myself.”.
Even comedy mainstays have drifted into less frequent visibility. Mike Myers, huge in the late ’90s and 2000s thanks to Shrek and Austin Powers, has continued acting “from time to time,” but his roles since then have been fewer and lower profile.
Ashton Kutcher hasn’t admitted to retiring, but he’s explained why he’s not as present on screen. He once said that roles can hinge on what you look like—“It’s a very big part of what you’re imbuing as the character”—and that some parts come to him because of his look, while others don’t.
Macaulay Culkin’s case is different: he’s still recognizable, just not consistently “in” the way he once was. Referred to as “the Home Alone kid. ” the former child star is less active in Hollywood as an adult. but he does make occasional cameos in TV shows and movie projects. He remains highly visible in other ways, including attending industry events and giving interviews.
Freddie Prinze Jr. also addressed the shift head-on. After starring in the ’90s and 2000s with roles in She’s All That and the Scooby-Doo franchise. he confirmed in 2017 that it was intentional. “I’ve really stepped away from the acting,” he told CBS News at the time. “I don’t really do that anymore.”.
For Hilary Duff, the MIA feeling is about spotlight level and project choice. After making a name for herself as the titular star of Lizzie McGuire. her post-Disney Channel era TV roles have largely flown under the radar. and she doesn’t take on that many to begin with. In 2026, she started focusing on a musical renaissance.
Brenda Song is still working, but the pace has changed. Famous for her Disney Channel prominence in the 2000s—especially as airhead heiress in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and its offshoot The Suite Life on Deck—her current projects tend to fly under the radar.
Zach Braff remains busy, even if he’s not as visible on screen. He played J.D. on Scrubs and starred in Garden State alongside Natalie Portman during that era. More recently. most people likely wouldn’t name his acting projects. but he has been directing for hit TV shows like Ted Lasso and Shrinking.
Sarah Michelle Gellar. much like Freddie Prinze Jr. has been largely MIA in the years since her peak visibility in the ’90s and 2000s. driven by Buffy and Scooby-Doo. It isn’t that she stopped acting—she has credits across the 2010s and 2020s—but she’s been less visible overall. Gellar also took a “deliberate time-out” in the 2010s. “At that point I just said I needed to take a break,” Gellar said in 2026. “And I’m so glad I did on so many levels.”.
Raven-Symoné’s acting schedule has slowed too. She was a hero for many in the aughts. portraying the vision-having titular character on Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven. She still speaks out in interviews and appears at industry events. but her acting work has slowed down quite a bit. Even so, she starred in the reboot Raven’s Home between 2017 and 2023.
Ryan Phillippe’s “low-key” phase is tied to selectivity. Many teens in the ’90s had a Ryan Phillippe poster. expecting a constant Hollywood presence—but the Cruel Intentions star is more low-key now while still being a working actor. In 2021. Phillippe told Forbes he’s become more selective: “You read a script when you are young. you’re like ‘Oh. I can’t wait to do this bada** thing and we’ll be in this far off place. As you get older. it’s kind of like Well. what are the hours going to be and can I fly back home to see my family?’” Phillippe shares children Ava Phillippe and Deacon Phillippe with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon.
Matthew Broderick is also a reminder that “MIA” isn’t always an absence from work. He’s not MIA at all—he’s a huge deal on Broadway—but he is much less present in TV and film nowadays. Broderick became a household name after his star turn in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986).
Mara Wilson, too, has shifted her public shape. The adorable and prolific child actress starred in ’90s hit movies including Mrs. Doubtfire, Miracle on 34th Street and Matilda. She appears in projects from time to time, but she isn’t particularly high-profile in Hollywood. In a long-form interview with The Guardian in 2023. Wilson talked about how much fame weighed on her from an early age—especially the pressure of conforming to impossible expectations—and said she’s concentrating on her career as a writer today instead.
Bridgit Mendler’s pivot is one of the sharpest in the lineup. She made a name for herself as a Disney Channel star. appearing most memorably in Good Luck Charlie and Lemonade Mouth. She went on to act in adult projects. including the short-lived series Merry Happy Whatever. but now she’s focusing on being a space tech founder. She also graduated from both MIT and Harvard Law School.
Brandy may still be around, but her fame from the late ’90s hasn’t translated into the 2020s. Back then, she starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer and the TV show Moesha.
Frankie Muniz’s path is a career change, not a fade. He was a very famous child star thanks to Malcolm in the Middle and Agent Cody Banks, but in adulthood he left Hollywood to become a professional racing driver.
Daryl Sabara rose to fame as Juni Cortez in the Spy Kids movie series, then stopped acting anywhere near the same amount as an adult. He has still appeared in a bunch of his wife Meghan Trainor’s music videos.
Martin Lawrence isn’t gone so much as less frequently booked. Everywhere you looked in the ’90s and into the 2000s. he was there—most notably as part of the Bad Boys franchise and Big Momma’s House. Since then. he’s taken part in only a handful of acting projects. including 2020’s Bad Boys for Life and 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. It’s unclear whether he stepped back on purpose or not.
Meg Ryan’s reduction has been tied to a long break, too. A total superstar in the ’80s and ’90s for films like When Harry Met Sally. You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. she stepped back quite a bit in recent years—including quitting acting for a solid eight years. In 2023. Ryan explained to People. “I took a giant break because I felt like there’s just so many other parts of my experience as a human being I wanted to develop.”.
Taken together, the stories don’t read like one single mystery. Some actors are still working, just away from the biggest screens. Others step back for family, reinvention, or an explicit decision to protect their lives. And for the ones who are “MIA,” the most telling part is how often the quiet is chosen—not forced.
MISRYOUM entertainment news actors Hollywood celebrity news MIA Julia Stiles Eva Mendes Tobey Maguire Brendan Fraser Cameron Diaz Geena Davis Josh Hartnett Mike Myers Ashton Kutcher Macaulay Culkin Freddie Prinze Jr. Hilary Duff Brenda Song Zach Braff Sarah Michelle Gellar Raven-Symoné Ryan Phillippe Matthew Broderick Mara Wilson Bridgit Mendler Brandy Frankie Muniz Daryl Sabara Martin Lawrence Meg Ryan
So they’re just… hiding now? Guess Hollywood got boring.
I don’t get why people call it “MIA” like they got kidnapped. Actors take breaks, it’s not that deep. Also Julia Stiles was in Bourne? I thought she was retired or something.
Meg Ryan being MIA is probably bc of the whole thing with movies not doing well anymore or whatever, right? Like everyone saying “step away” but really it’s just no offers. And then they do voice work and commercials like that means they’re back? Idk.
Eva Mendes voice work and commercials… sounds like she’s still working though. This article makes it seem like they vanished but it’s more like “less famous” not “gone.” Julia Stiles being in Bourne now confuses me too, I barely remember her connection to that series. Hollywood comeback story is real, just not in the way they want you to think.
