Two people were stabbed during an altercation at a community college in New York on Sept. 16, police said.
The stabbing unfolded at SUNY Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York, outside of New York City. Police responded to the scene after receiving multiple calls reporting a stabbing at about 12:40 p.m. According to the Westchester County Police Department, two suspects were taken into custody and a knife was recovered at the scene.
There was no ongoing threat to the community and no other suspects are being sought, police said.
The stabbing happened amid a “dispute that turned physical,” police said.
The two injured victims were taken to Westchester Medical Center, one with serious injuries, according to police. Both suspects were also taken to a different hospital for injuries from the fight, but neither was stabbed, the police department said.
A Westchester County Police spokesperson told the Journal News, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the four people involved all knew each other.
“It’s just shocking,” witness Leonardo Rivera, a 21-year-old student, told the Journal News. “I have no words.”
SUNY Westchester Community College’s Office of the President said in a statement its student center was closed after the stabbing, but was later reopened, and all other buildings and operations went on as normal.
“Our top priority is ensuring a safe and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, and staff,” the school said.
