Protests erupt across US after two fatal ICE shootings
Protesters from Houston to Boston, Portland, Maine, and Los Angeles speak out after two recent ICE shooting deaths, citing fear and injustice.
Chicago police are now saying 15 victims were shot Saturday night after gunfire erupted at a park on the city’s South Side.
The shooting occurred at around 11:37 p.m. local time on Aug. 29 after police tried to disperse a gathering in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, according to the Chicago Police Department. Gunshots rang out, striking multiple people in the crowd, police said.
A 35-year-old male was pronounced dead after being shot and transported to the University of Chicago Hospital. WGN-9 reported that the man was identified by the Cook County Examiner’s Office as Rontonio Guterz.
Chicago police provided the following information about the other 14 victims so far identified in the shooting:
- A 34-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
- A 39-year-old male sustained gunshot wounds to the right leg and arm and was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
- A 40-year-old female sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
- A 45-year-old female sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg and self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital, where she is listed in good condition.
- A 26-year-old female sustained gunshot wounds to her chest and was transported to the University of Chicago in good condition.
- A 42-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to the University of Chicago in good condition.
- A 37-year-old female sustained a gunshot wound to the body. The victim’s condition and hospital are unknown at this time.
- A 23-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the body. The victim’s condition and hospital are unknown at this time.
- A 35-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the body. The victim’s condition and hospital are unknown at this time.
- A 47-year-old female was transported to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition.
- A 23-year-old female was transported to the University of Chicago in fair condition.
- A 43-year-old female was transported to the University of Chicago in fair condition.
- A 21-year-old female was transported to the University of Chicago in fair condition.
- A 44-year-old female was transported to the University of Chicago in fair condition.
Authorities did not immediately release information about a suspect or suspects, and no arrests were announced as of Aug. 31. Police said no officers were injured in the shooting, and the incident remains under investigation.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that could help identify the suspect or suspects.
Pritzker responds to Chicago mass shooting
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker responded to the shooting on social media Sunday, saying the incident “left Chicago mourning.”
“Gun violence has no place here – and law enforcement will work around the clock to ensure accountability and keep communities safe,” he wrote. “My heart is with the victims, families and those affected.”
Earlier the same day, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson shared a statement on X, saying the shooting underscored the lasting impact of gun violence on victims, families and communities. Johnson went on to say his administration would continue efforts to curb gun violence and support those affected by shootings.
“We remain steadfast in our work to break these cycles of trauma by continuing to stop the flow of guns into our communities and investing in the resources that help prevent violence before it occurs,” Johnson added.
