Ballybofey cyclists finish 1,100km double for kidney charity
Two Donegal men have completed a gruelling six-day cycling challenge from Malin Head to Mizen Head, and back again. Ballybofey men and good friends Seamy McDermott and Vinney Gillespie were greeted as heroes when they arrived back at the most northerly point of Donegal yesterday at 4.30pm. They crossed the line to the sound of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ after an incredible 1,100 kilometres, all in aid of the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) National Kidney Support Centre. The apir have already raised a staggering €6,000
for the charity after DOUBLING their original goal. The emotion at completing the journey was there for all to see, including amongst them many friends and family especially their colleagues from the Finn Wheelers Cycling Club. But for Seamy it was a very special moment. It was 24 years ago that Seamy received a kidney as part of a life-saving transplant from a deceased donor. An emotional Seamy said it was difficult to put into words what it meant to be back standing in Malin
Head and in Donegal after their journey. He said “There’s a huge sense of relief, pride and gratitude. “The heat, the long days on the road and the physical demands of the challenge and heat tested us over the first few days, but we kept reminding ourselves why we were doing it. “Twenty-four years ago, I was given the gift of life through a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. “This journey was my way of honouring that gift, raising awareness of organ donation and
supporting the incredible work of the Irish Kidney Association.” Seamy paid a special tribute to his fellow rider and fellow cancer survivor Vinney for all they had gone through together. He said “I want to sincerely thank my great friend and fellow cancer survivor Vinney for his support, encouragement and companionship throughout this challenge. Having someone who understands life’s battles beside you means more than words can express. “A very special thank you goes to my wife Jennifer, who followed behind us every kilometre of
the way, keeping us safe, making sure we stayed hydrated, applying sunscreen when needed, and providing constant encouragement.” He also said a sincere thank you to anyone who supported them in any through messages of suport or donations. He added “Finally, thank you to everyone who donated, shared our story, sent messages of support, cheered us on along the route and believed in what we were trying to achieve. Every contribution helps raise awareness of organ donation and supports people living with kidney disease. “I
hope this challenge shows what can be possible because of the generosity of donors and their families. I will be forever grateful for the second chance I was given.” People can support the fundraiser by donating online to Support Malin to Mizen Head Double Cycle on iDonate.ie
