Zverev meets Fritz as Halle matchups heat up

Zverev vs – In Halle’s Terra Wortmann Open semifinals on Saturday, Alexander Zverev faces Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe plays Daniel Altmaier. Zverev enters after winning at Roland Garros and going 3-0 this week, but Fritz has dominated their head-to-head 9-5 and won th

Saturday in Halle doesn’t just promise tennis. It promises a collision of narratives: a German breakthrough chasing redemption against an American who has owned the matchup for years, and another U.S. contender rolling forward after a night of near-misses.

On the semifinal schedule at the Terra Wortmann Open. Alexander Zverev takes on Taylor Fritz. followed by Daniel Altmaier against Frances Tiafoe. The Germany vs. USA storyline runs through the day’s matches—something fans may even recognize later when early results at the World Cup raise the possibility of similar clashes on the soccer pitch next month.

Zverev vs. Fritz feels like the more obvious test of whether something has truly changed.

Zverev, 29, recently won a Grand Slam at Roland Garros. That matters. But beating Fritz is a different kind of hurdle. Heading into their Saturday meeting. Fritz leads the head-to-head series 9-5 and has defeated Zverev an almost unbelievable six times in a row. That streak includes two grass-court wins for Fritz: a five-set victory at Wimbledon in 2024 and a straight-set win in last summer’s Stuttgart final.

The question hovering over Halle is simple—has Zverev finally turned a corner now that the burden of never winning a major is gone? He will get his answer by testing it against the one opponent who has repeatedly stopped him.

Zverev has looked more like a man on momentum since that Roland Garros triumph. Earlier this week, he went 3-0 after beating Vit Kopriva, Yannick Hanfmann, and Raphael Collignon. Fritz. meanwhile. punched his ticket to the last four by ousting Zizou Bergs. Fabian Marozsan. and Ben Shelton—finishing that Shelton match with a score of 6-7(5). 7-6(8). 7-6(3).

So even with Zverev’s recent run, the ground reality hasn’t shifted: Fritz has continued to be incredible on grass, and Halle has not yet shown Zverev running roughshod through the draw. An upset, given the recent history, might not even be the right word—Fritz still looks built for these moments.

Pick: Fritz in 3.

Later on Saturday, the other semifinal carries its own kind of pressure—because Tiafoe arrived by surviving danger, not by gliding into the match.

On Friday, Tiafoe went the distance and saved five match points before outlasting Felix Auger-Aliassime 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12). It continued a strong run for the 26th-ranked American, who also played well at the French Open by reaching the fourth round and making the quarterfinals in Stuttgart last week.

Before the Auger-Aliassime win, Tiafoe had handled Flavio Cobolli and Sho Shimabukuro in straight sets—setting up a semifinal that doesn’t just test skill, but stamina and nerve.

Now he faces Daniel Altmaier, 28-year-old, who arrives after stringing together Halle victories over Nikoloz Basilashvili, Hubert Hurkacz, and Daniil Medvedev. The last two were tight three-setters, and the draw has given Altmaier plenty of resistance to grind through.

Still, their head-to-head history makes the matchup feel like a steep climb. This will be Tiafoe’s fifth meeting with Altmaier on Saturday, with Tiafoe sweeping the series 4-0. And the Germans have had chances to prove themselves on every surface—Tiafoe has beaten Altmaier on clay (twice). on hard court. and on grass.

Altmaier gets another shot at changing that pattern after making it this far, but the match-up’s record—plus Tiafoe’s recent closeness to breakthroughs—suggests he won’t get an easy runway.

Pick: Tiafoe in 2.

  1. So Fritz is up like 9-5 but Zverev just won at Roland Garros so it’s basically free money for Zverev right? hopefully.

  2. I can’t believe Fritz beat him 6 times in a row like what. Also Halle matches always sound confusing, Terra Wortmann Open?? who names these lol

  3. Wait is this the same Zverev that keeps getting mentioned for off-court stuff? If it’s him then I’m not watching. Also they said World Cup clashes later?? tennis people always mixing sports somehow.

  4. The headline makes it sound like it’s gonna be some big Germany vs USA thing but it’s just tennis right. Still, Fritz dominated the H2H and the article says Zverev might be “turning a corner” so… I guess grass is different? if Zverev loses again he’ll never change anyway.
