Zuckerberg pushes Meta’s AI glasses toward style and wear

Meta’s AI – Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the success of the company’s new AI smart glasses will depend on getting the look and comfort right—something he says he learned through collaborating with eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica. The new glasses, unveiled Tuesday w

Mark Zuckerberg didn’t talk about Meta’s latest AI glasses the way many tech leaders do—like a checklist of capabilities or a race for the next breakthrough.

In an interview with Feed Me creator Emily Sundberg, the Meta CEO framed the challenge more like design work. “I think there’s going to be a spectrum both of styles and different amounts of functionality and different price points. ” Zuckerberg said. “But the challenge is that each one you need to hit the sweet spot of making it good-looking and comfortable to wear and delivering on the functionality.”.

He added, “I’m pretty involved in everything we build,” signaling that this push isn’t being treated as a side project.

On Tuesday, Meta unveiled a new line of smart glasses starting at $299—cheaper than the company’s entry-level Ray-Ban glasses. The new product was developed with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, and it doesn’t carry Ray-Ban or Oakley branding.

Zuckerberg said working on smart glasses made him think differently about priorities than he would in software. Through the EssilorLuxottica partnership, he learned “how they build their brands, how they do their design, what they feel is important.”

That brand-and-design education is showing up in how he describes the future. Zuckerberg told Sundberg: “The future is going to be these different wearable platforms that I think merge with fashion.”

He also pointed to his own fashion instincts. describing how he has fashion interests of his own and noting he evolved from what he said used to be his favorite item back in the aughts: Adidas slides. In fact, the interview includes a photo of Zuckerberg wearing Adidas slides, with Dustin Moscovitz shown to the left.

The timing matters for more than aesthetics. Zuckerberg is preparing Meta’s wearable push as rivals move into AI-powered eyewear. Google and Snap are both racing into the category. Snap’s new AI glasses. for example. drew immediate online rebuff after launching earlier in June. with criticism centered on their expense and clunky feel.

Zuckerberg returned to the same theme when he addressed what will make these devices stick. “And I think the key for any one of these,” he said, “Whether it’s on your wrist or on your face or anything else, it needs to be something that you’re proud to wear and it needs to be comfortable.”

  1. So the glasses are basically gonna be cute and comfy now? Cool cool. Still not sure why my face needs AI though lol.

  2. 299 is cheaper than Ray-Ban so it’s a win right? But didn’t Snap already prove this is just clunky wearable tech that no one wants. Maybe Meta’s version will be less annoying… hopefully.

  3. I read “Zuckerberg pushes” and automatically assumed it was like forcing people to wear them at work or something. Like the whole comfort thing is just marketing. Also why are they talking about Adidas slides… is this even about glasses or vibes?

  4. The “EssilorLuxottica” part sounds legit but I’m still skeptical. Every time they say “proud to wear” I think about how tech gets pushed on us anyway. Like first it was software and now it’s on your face, next it’s gonna be on your refrigerator or whatever. And if Snap got roasted for being expensive and clunky, Meta better not pretend they learned nothing from that.
