Crawley left out as Coles earns ODI debut chance

Former England opener Zak Crawley has been left out of England’s 16-man squad for the three-match ODI series against India. The Kent batter was included in the squad for England’s last ODI series against Sri Lanka in January, but loses his place after an uninspiring domestic campaign thus far, averaging 10.17 in his last six T20 Blast matches. All-rounder Jamie Overton, also included in January’s squad, misses out having suffered a right thigh injury in May while on IPL duty with the Chennai Super Kings,
creating an opportunity for the inclusion of highly rated all-rounder James Coles. Elsewhere, England veteran
Liam Livingstone’s absence extends after the batter – who has exactly 100 caps for his country across all three formats – called interactions with Rob Key during the 2025 Champions Trophy campaign “the worst experiences I’ve had in cricket” during an interview with Cricinfo. Liam Dawson – having retired from red-ball cricket just last month – is also included, as he looks to continue his international white-ball career with the 2027 50-over World Cup on the horizon. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue both feature in
the squad having been rested for the first T20 at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday after they both played in England’s 160-run third Test defeat against New Zealand just two days earlier. Captain Harry Brook will likely lead the side out for the first ODI at Edgbaston as rumours continue to swirl around whether he will be appointed Test captain in the aftermath of Ben Stokes’ international retirement. England ODI squad vs India, Zak Crawley omitted, James Coles ODI debut, Harry Brook captain, Jamie Overton thigh injury, Liam Livingstone Rob Key worst experiences, T20 World Cup 2027 Liam Dawson
So they just… left Crawley out? That seems wild.
I didn’t even know Crawley was in the mix tbh. 10.17 in T20 Blast sounds like he’s cooked, but ODI is different. Still, England selection is always random.
Wait is this the same Zak Crawley that played for England like years ago? If he averaged 10 then yeah bench him I guess. But why is India series timing so soon after all that other stuff. Also Liam Livingstone “worst experiences”?? That part feels like tea more than cricket.
Jamie Overton out with a thigh injury in May while on IPL duty… so England just swaps in the new guy? James Coles getting picked because he was “top price” in The Hundred is kinda the same as sports being rigged right? Like if you pay a lot you automatically get a chance, that’s how it feels. And Jofra Archer rested too like come on, injuries and rest are always convenient.
