YouTube walked away from NFL package after Australia switch

YouTube walked – Talks between YouTube and the NFL over a five-game 2026 regular-season package moved into a “long-form contract review” stage—until the Week 1 49ers–Rams game in Australia was removed from the deal. YouTube then pulled out, leaving Netflix to land the package.

For a brief stretch. it looked like YouTube and the NFL were closing in on a deal that would reshape the 2026 regular season. At one point. negotiations for a five-game NFL package of regular-season games for 2026 had progressed to a “long-form contract review.” Then a single decision from the league changed the tone of the talks.

The turning point came after the NFL removed the Week 1 49ers–Rams game in Australia from the package. The league believed YouTube would still be willing to split the remaining five games with Netflix. Instead, YouTube pulled the plug.

As presented in John Ourand’s reporting for Varsity, several sources said YouTube executives were so upset at losing the Australia game that they “walked.” The message, at least as Ourand interprets it, was stark: YouTube wanted NFL games, but it didn’t need them.

The fallout doesn’t end with one package. YouTube already has the Sunday Ticket product. and it’s doing so while a major legal fight hangs over that business. The pending appeal of the $4.7 billion verdict in an antitrust lawsuit could swing the value dramatically—potentially turning into a $14.1 billion judgment. Whatever happens in court could alter what Sunday Ticket becomes. and how aggressively YouTube is willing to negotiate for future rights.

Beyond the legal calendar. this episode points to a harder question inside streaming partnerships: how badly does YouTube want to be tied to pro football when the league comes back for more?. If YouTube passed on a slice of the NFL even after talks moved into a late-stage “long-form contract review. ” it suggests the next table could look different when partners start lining up for the various NFL packages.

  1. So YouTube basically got mad and left bc of one game? Seems childish, but also the NFL always thinks they’re in control.

  2. I don’t get it, why would one Australia matchup matter that much. Like it’s still NFL games either way right? Sounds like drama between billion dollar companies.

  3. Week 1 49ers–Rams being removed in Australia… so YouTube walked out? I thought YouTube already had the NFL Sunday Ticket so this shouldn’t even be a big deal. Unless this is about ads or something? also Netflix got it “for a brief stretch”?? what does that even mean

  4. Netflix taking the package makes me laugh because they’re always late to the party. But then the article’s talking about a $4.7B antitrust verdict and maybe it turns into $14.1B?? That’s insane. So is YouTube backing out bc of the lawsuit or bc of the Australia game… or both?? I’m confused.
